When it comes to Jeopardy!, there have been plenty of memorable contestants—both legendary champions and unforgettable flops.
But if you’re talking about the worst Jeopardy! contestant of all time, there’s one name that fans (especially SNL fans) always bring up: Burt Reynolds.
Or as he preferred to be called: Turd Ferguson.
A Legendary Disaster in Celebrity Jeopardy History
To be clear, we’re talking about the Saturday Night Live parody version of Celebrity Jeopardy!—not the real quiz show.
But Norm Macdonald’s portrayal of Burt Reynolds in these iconic sketches has gone down in comedy history as the ultimate Jeopardy! trainwreck.
Here’s why Burt Reynolds (or Turd Ferguson) is undeniably the worst contestant ever:
1. He Changed His Name Midway Through the Game
In an unforgettable moment, Reynolds interrupts the game to demand that Alex Trebek (played by Will Ferrell) refer to him by a new name: Turd Ferguson.
“Why?” Trebek asks in exasperation.
“Because it’s funny,” Reynolds shrugs.
This act of chaotic rebellion sets the tone for the rest of his nonsensical gameplay.
2. He Got Nothing Right—Ever
While other contestants at least tried to answer questions—no matter how wrong—Reynolds rarely buzzed in, and when he did, the results were hilariously awful.
His complete lack of effort (and zero correct answers) made him a walking disaster at the podium.
3. More Focused on His Hat Than the Game
In one sketch, Reynolds appears wearing a massive cowboy hat. When Trebek questions it, Reynolds simply says:
“It’s a big hat. It’s funny. I bought it from my own fashion line.”
Rather than caring about the game or the questions, Reynolds spends most of his time messing with Trebek, showing off his hat, chewing gum, and generally being an agent of comedic chaos.
Why Fans Love “Turd Ferguson” Anyway
Despite being the worst player on paper, Reynolds’ absurd antics made him a fan-favorite.
Norm Macdonald’s deadpan delivery and Will Ferrell’s increasingly frustrated Trebek created one of SNL’s most legendary running sketches.
The “Turd Ferguson” bit has since become a cultural meme and shorthand for ridiculous game show behavior.
