Elon Musk Fails In Attempt to Buy Wisconsin Supreme Court as Judge Susan Crawford Beats Brad Schimel.

In a surprising and decisive turn of events, liberal candidate Susan Crawford triumphed over conservative Brad Schimel in Wisconsin’s high-stakes state Supreme Court race on Tuesday.
Despite the backing of tech mogul Elon Musk, who invested approximately $25 million into the race, Schimel’s conservative campaign was unable to overcome the momentum behind Crawford, a victory that signals a significant shift in Wisconsin politics and offers a major boost for Democrats.
This judicial election, which became the most expensive in U.S.history, captivated national attention not only because of the candidates involved but also due to Musk’s high-profile involvement in funding Schimel’s campaign.
As a billionaire and prominent ally of former President Donald Trump, Musk’s decision to pour millions of dollars into the race to help flip the Wisconsin Supreme Court in favor of conservatives had massive implications.
However, the outcome showed that even the vast resources of one of the world’s richest men could not guarantee success in such a high-stakes contest.
Musk’s decision to throw his financial weight behind Brad Schimel was a calculated attempt to shift the ideological balance of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which had become a critical battleground for the future of the state’s judicial system.
In a state that has seen fierce political battles over issues like abortion rights, voting laws, and redistricting, control of the state’s highest court is seen as pivotal for shaping the political landscape.
Schimel, a former Wisconsin Attorney General, campaigned heavily on conservative values, seeking to secure a majority that would align the court with right-wing legal principles.
Musk’s involvement in funding Schimel’s campaign was widely seen as part of a larger strategy to push back against the increasing influence of progressive causes, particularly in swing states like Wisconsin.
The $25 million contribution, which was directed through a network of Super PACs, made this race the most expensive judicial election in the country’s history.
However, despite Musk’s substantial financial backing, Schimel faced stiff resistance from a well-organized and energized liberal base determined to protect their state’s judicial independence.
This base rallied around Susan Crawford, a former federal judge with a reputation for fairness and impartiality.
Crawford’s win is a significant moment for Wisconsin Democrats and for the broader progressive movement.
Her victory is not only a personal triumph but also a testament to the power of grassroots mobilization and the concerns many voters have regarding the influence of money in politics.
Throughout the campaign, Crawford framed her candidacy as one of fairness, transparency, and judicial independence—an important message in a state where Republicans have tried to push through restrictive policies on voting rights and abortion.
Political commentator John Nichols, speaking from Madison, Wisconsin, highlighted the importance of this race.
“This is a huge signal from a battleground state that Americans are genuinely upset, genuinely angry, I think, with Trump and with Musk,” Nichols explained.
“The fact that Musk could pour $25 million into this race, and still lose, shows just how out of touch these billionaires are with the average American voter. They may have the money, but they don’t have the popular support.”
The results were decisive: Crawford beat Schimel by a significant margin, despite the massive cash infusion on the other side.
Her win guarantees that Wisconsin’s Supreme Court will remain in liberal hands, which could have important consequences for key issues like abortion access, voting rights, and gerrymandering in the coming years.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court race wasn’t just a win for Democrats—it’s also a powerful message to the broader political landscape.
In the past, money from billionaires like Musk has been a decisive factor in elections, often tipping the scales in favor of conservatives.
This time, however, voters seemed to reject the influence of wealthy donors in favor of a more grassroots-driven, principled approach to justice.
John Nichols pointed out that this was more than just a localized victory.
“It sends a message to the entire country, especially in battleground states, that the influence of billionaires like Elon Musk is not always going to sway voters,” Nichols said.
“People are tired of outside money trying to buy elections. This is a major blow to Musk, Trump, and the whole right-wing establishment trying to use their wealth to dictate the future.”
While the Wisconsin race was a resounding victory for Democrats, Tuesday’s elections weren’t entirely in the blue column.
In Florida, Republicans managed to hold both of their special House seats, maintaining their narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. The races in Florida were expected to be tough for Democrats, given the state’s strong conservative leanings.
But despite the Republican wins, Nichols noted a significant shift in the Florida districts that should not be ignored.
“While Republicans managed to hold onto these two seats, there was a huge shift toward the Democrats in both districts,” Nichols said.
“This shows that even in deep-red districts, there’s a growing discontent with the status quo, and a growing willingness to vote against Republican candidates, especially with the state’s political environment becoming more polarized.”
