A HOMELESS GIRL SEES A MILLIONAIRE INJURED WITH A BABY UNDER THE RAIN, BUT RECOGNIZES HIM WHEN…
The rain pounded the windshield with an unrelenting rhythm, a drumbeat Eduardo Morales had grown accustomed to on his long journey through the countryside.
His fingers drummed absentmindedly on the leather steering wheel, in time with the rain and the windshield wipers. He almost allowed himself to enjoy the moment. For once, there was no boardroom, no assistant calling with updates, no contract to sign. Just the road, the rain, and the steady breathing of his most precious cargo in the back seat.
Eduardo adjusted the rearview mirror and let his gaze rest on the baby, securely strapped in his car seat. His son. Eight months old, cheeks flushed from an innocent sleep, fists clenched against his chest. Even with the storm outside, the child’s face was a haven of serenity.
The image melted Eduardo like never before. Beneath the ruthless reputation of a corporate magnate hid a father who would burn the world to protect this little one.
The smell of wet earth seeped through the ventilation grilles. It transported him back to his childhood in the countryside: barefoot feet, muddy puddles, running through fields with rain pouring down in buckets. He smiled remembering it. Who would have thought that the barefoot boy from a poor village would become a man driving a luxury car, a millionaire, returning to those same rural roads with his own son? Life had a twisted sense of humor.
The curve ahead was sharp. He lifted his foot off the accelerator. That’s when it happened.
A deafening crash. Then another. Tires exploded, rubber shredded. The steering wheel shook violently as the car veered off. Eduardo’s chest tightened. His heart pounded hard. He fought to control himself, but the steering wheel shook like a beast in his hands. The rear tires gave way, and the luxury sedan began to skid on the slippery pavement.
—No… no… no —he murmured through clenched teeth, trying to stabilize the vehicle. The rain-slick road betrayed him.
From the back seat came a piercing scream: his son, startled awake by the chaos. The baby’s cries pierced Eduardo like knives. All he could think about was keeping him alive, keeping him alive.
The car spun, metal screeching against asphalt. The world tilted, rolled. The glass shattered into a thousand sparkling pieces. Eduardo’s body slammed against the seatbelt, ribs protesting the tension. A sharp pain ran across his forehead where something sharp cut deeply. The baby’s screams mixed with the monstrous screech of twisting steel as the car flipped once, twice, then landed upside down with a terrifying crash.
Silence fell. A suffocating silence, soaked by the rain.
Eduardo hung suspended by the seatbelt, his head throbbing and blood dripping into his eyes. His lungs struggled to breathe. He turned his head, vision blurred, and through the broken glass saw his son crying in the overturned seat. Alive. Terrified. His small body trembling in the straps.
Rage struck Eduardo’s arms. He fumbled with the buckle, cursed when it jammed, then it released and he fell onto the broken glass. His chest screamed in pain, but adrenaline pushed him. He crawled toward the back seat. “Daddy’s here… I’m here, my love,” he whispered hoarsely, voice trembling. His hands shook as he unfastened the straps and hugged the baby.
Outside, rain poured in torrents through the missing windows. Eduardo stood unsteadily, holding the child. Blood clouded his vision, ribs burning with every breath, but none of that mattered. The baby’s heart beat strongly against his chest. Alive. Still alive.
He stumbled out of the wreckage and into the downpour, his shoes sinking into the mud. The road was deserted, endless in both directions. No lights, no help. Only the echo of the rain and the frantic beating of his heart. His knees buckled. He fell hard onto the soaked earth, clutching the baby tightly.
—Someone… please —he shouted into the night. But the storm swallowed his plea. Darkness closed over his sight.
His last vision before losing consciousness was of small bare feet splashing through puddles toward him.
