The late Liam Payne‘s girlfriend Kate Cassidy is finally ready to open up more on his tragic death while continuing to mourn the One Direction singer’s untimely passing.

Liam Payne's Girlfriend Kate Cassidy Says She Wishes She'd Stayed With Him In Emotional First Interview

Of course, Kate had been in Argentina with Liam last October before traveling back home to the United States. Not long after she departed from Buenos Aires, the 31-year-old boy band singer fell to his death from a hotel balcony in the South American city. In the weeks following his passing, she released a statement and eventually revealed he was dreaming of proposing. And now, Kate is fully opening up about the tragedy in her first interview on the matter.

On Wednesday, the Sun published the 25-year-old influencer’s heartbreaking words. During the interview, Kate called her time with Liam a “fairytale romance” and noted that he’d supported her “through thick and thin.”

She also said she was “not to blame” for his death in the “tragic accident.” Revealing that she went back home alone to care for the couple’s rescue dog Nala, she insisted that had she known what would happen, she never would have gotten on that flight:

“Obviously if I knew, if I could see into the future, I would never have left Argentina.”

Kate used the interview to debunk internet conspiracy theories about why she left Argentina. As she explained, she’d returned home to look after Nala. And now, she and the pup are left to mourn Liam’s loss together:

“It still doesn’t feel fully real for me that he’s not here. I’m trying to be the best I can be, but I feel like my life has changed so much. I think about Liam every second of every day.”

She went on to note that it was typical for her and Liam to travel “separately,” especially since she “had a responsibility” to care for their dog back in Florida, saying:

“We had our dog and obviously I never, ever thought this event would occur.”

Kate then added more memories of just how close the couple was prior to his death:

“From the moment I met Liam, I genuinely believed we were soulmates. He was the most humble, charming, normal person you could ever hope to come across, and genuinely one of the best people I’ve ever met in my life.”

Crushingly, she added:

“Love is so optimistic, and you just hope that everything will work out at the end.”

The mourning girlfriend also gave shocking insight into the moment when she first learned of Liam’s death. Thankfully, it was not on social media — which was doubly a blessing because she happened to be scrolling on TikTok at the time.

She explained:

“I feel blessed I didn’t find out over social media because I just couldn’t even imagine that. I was in our home with our dog, scrolling TikTok and one of Liam’s friends called me.”

Her mind immediately went “blank,” and then she “blacked out” in disbelief:

“I didn’t believe it at first. I thought it was just a rumor. Or something that somebody made up just to get views. Then instantly I just had a bad feeling in my gut. I was like, ‘why would somebody make this up? Is this true?’ And I feel like I just completely blacked out.”

Then, she recalled, the next few hours of her life were the longest ones ever:

“Then I was in touch with his family, and my mum got the first flight out to be with me. I remember pacing around the house — poor Nala thought I was trying to play, she kept jumping up at me. I didn’t sleep at all that night.”

So, so sad.

And when the Sun asked Kate whether she had any thoughts about what might have caused the Story Of My Life singer to behave in the manner he did in the hours leading up to his death following her departure from Buenos Aires, she declined to answer:

“I don’t think I want to answer that because I literally wouldn’t even know.”

Just awful.
