Seth takes a closer look at the Trump administration’s bizarre handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case raising more questions as a new report says that the government released a version of the jail cell video that had a missing minute.
In a scathing late-night segment that aired on Wednesday night, comedian and political commentator Seth Meyers reignited public scrutiny over one of the most controversial and unresolved episodes of the Trump administration — the death of Jeffrey Epstein.
Meyers, host of *Late Night with Seth Meyers*, took sharp aim at the Justice Department’s handling of Epstein’s incarceration, trial, and ultimately suspicious death, following the release of a newly surfaced jail cell surveillance video that appears to be edited — with a full minute mysteriously missing.
“The minute’s gone. It’s just… gone,” Meyers said, staring blankly into the camera during his “Closer Look” monologue. “And that minute? It just happens to fall right during the time guards say they stopped watching?
Come on. This isn’t just fishy. It’s deep-fried conspiracy with extra tartar sauce.”
Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender, was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) on August 10, 2019.
The official cause of death was ruled as suicide by hanging — a conclusion that was immediately met with widespread skepticism due to Epstein’s ties to high-profile figures including former President Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, and Prince Andrew.
But Meyers argued that even the most skeptical observers could not have predicted just how bizarre and mishandled the situation would become over the years.
The latest twist: a report indicating that federal officials released surveillance footage from Epstein’s cellblock that contains a glaring and unexplained one-minute gap.
“Let me get this straight,” Meyers continued. “The most high-profile inmate in the country — who had dirt on billionaires and world leaders — dies mysteriously in federal custody, the guards fall asleep, the cameras malfunction, and now the video footage we finally get… has a literal missing minute?” He paused, then added dryly, “Sure. Sounds totally legit.”
The new revelation came after a freedom-of-information request forced the Justice Department to hand over internal materials connected to Epstein’s incarceration.
While some of the documents had already raised red flags — including guard log inconsistencies, falsified records, and suspicious maintenance reports — the missing minute in the video has ignited fresh public concern that key evidence may have been tampered with, obscured, or intentionally deleted.
According to the official DOJ release, the video was pulled from the MCC’s main surveillance system covering the area outside Epstein’s cell between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on the morning of his death.
Officials initially claimed the footage was “incomplete due to a technical glitch,” but internal memos show that prison staff flagged the video as suspicious as early as 2020.
The missing segment reportedly occurred at 6:47 a.m. — within the exact window during which guards claimed they discovered Epstein unresponsive.
To viewers of Meyers’ show, the segment felt less like comedy and more like a public indictment of the Trump administration’s Department of Justice and its murky, inconsistent narrative around Epstein’s final hours.
“This is not an accident,” Meyers said. “This is what you get when you hire people who treat government oversight like it’s optional and accountability like it’s an allergic reaction.”
He then referenced former Attorney General William Barr, who at the time had publicly stated that he was “appalled” by Epstein’s death and vowed a full investigation.
But more than five years later, no DOJ officials or MCC employees have been charged or disciplined in connection to the death.
“Barr said he was appalled,” Meyers added, “but then went back to defending Trump like it was his side hustle. These guys say one thing in front of the cameras and then disappear like that minute on the tape.”
The clip of Meyers’ segment quickly circulated on social media, with hashtags like #EpsteinCoverUp and #MissingMinute trending on X (formerly Twitter).
While conspiracy theories about Epstein’s death have persisted for years — with some fueled by Trump himself during his presidency — the re-emergence of documented inconsistencies is giving even moderate observers new reasons to doubt the official story.
Among the figures reigniting public skepticism is Jennifer Rodgers, a former federal prosecutor, who commented in a televised interview that “procedural breakdowns don’t usually come with this many coincidences.
This is either extreme incompetence… or something far more troubling.”
Epstein’s death not only closed the door on his own testimony but also cut off legal pathways for uncovering the full extent of his alleged trafficking network — one that reportedly included powerful individuals from politics, entertainment, business, and even royalty.
While Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate, was convicted in 2021 for facilitating his sex trafficking operation, many of the men alleged to have been involved in or benefited from his crimes have never been publicly named or charged.
Meyers, noting this, didn’t mince words.
“They want us to believe this is all just a series of unfortunate events,” he said.
“Like the camera just *happened* to glitch, the guards *happened* to fall asleep, the logs were *accidentally* faked, and now a minute is *conveniently* missing. No one in Hollywood would greenlight this script. It’s too unbelievable.”
The Metropolitan Correctional Center was closed in 2021, allegedly due to deteriorating conditions and poor staffing.
But critics say the timing — barely two years after Epstein’s death — only adds to the appearance that the government was trying to erase evidence and distance itself from the case.
As Meyers wrapped up his monologue, he left viewers with a final, unsettling thought.
“We always say ‘the truth will come out,’” he said. “But maybe, in this case, the truth was lost in that missing minute — and they made damn sure we’ll never get it back.”
