Antony sent off for a wild challenge against Getafe as the Man United outcast spoils the fine start he had made to his loan spell at Real Betis
Real Betis loanee Antony will be suspended for next weekend’s clash with Real Madrid in La Liga after receiving an unnecessary red card during Sunday’s win away at Getafe.
Antony had made a fine start to life in Spain after arriving from Manchester United on loan towards the end of January.
The 24-year-old had not started a single Premier League game for United this season prior to his mid-term exit.
But Sunday’s trip to Getafe saw him start for the sixth game running for Betis. Those six games have seen Antony deliver three goals and two assists.
He set up Isco for the opening goal at Estadio Coliseum but his night ended on a sour note after he was sent off in the 90th minute of his side’s 2-1 victory.
Antony’s tenacious pressing helped his team win back possession in the third minute of added time. He then tried to dribble with the ball down the right wing but took a heavy touch, which saw him fail to beat Juan Iglesias.

Antony tried to plead is innocence by waving his finger towards the ref, but he was dismissed
Iglesias then played a pass back to his goalkeeper, only to be sent flying to the ground by a reckless lunge from Antony after the ball had gone.
Antony immediately tried to plead his innocence by waving a finger in the referee’s direction but Javier Alberola Rojas swiftly removed the red card from his back pocket and raised it above the Brazilian.
The commentator covering the match for Premier Sports described the tackle as ‘reckless’ and ‘completely unnecessary’, calling it a ‘heads gone moment’.
This was Antony’s first red card since March 2022 when he was dismissed in the last minute of Ajax’s 3-2 win over Feyenoord in the Netherlands.
Sunday’s win saw Betis move up to seventh in La Liga.
