Luis Suarez sends supportive message to Darwin Nunez as misfiring Liverpool striker responds to Arne Slot criticism following Aston Villa display
WHAT HAPPENED?
Nunez’s struggles in front of goal have drawn criticism from Slot, who questioned the Uruguayan’s attitude after the match in a press conference. His failure to capitalise on an open-goal chance and another one-on-one opportunity against Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez resulted in Liverpool dropping vital points in the title race after being held to a 2-2 draw at Villa Park on Wednesday evening.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Slot was vexed with Nunez and informed he would have a discussion with the forward regarding his work ethic as the Dutch manager felt his intensity dropped after squandering two gilt-edged goal-scoring opportunities. Following the manager’s remarks, the striker took to social media to share a defiant message, making it clear that he remains focused and determined to prove his worth.
“I wasn’t the best three weeks ago, and I’m not the worst now. If I fall, I get up. You’ll never see me give up,” he wrote. “I’m going to give it my all until the last day I’m here in Liverpool. Resilience! 💪🏼”.
WHAT SUAREZ SAID
Nunez’s message did not go unnoticed, and former Liverpool striker Suarez was quick to lend his support. The Uruguay legend, who enjoyed a prolific spell at Anfield, responded with words of encouragement and wrote: “Of course, GOAL SCORER, that’s how I love you! That’s the attitude, always positive. Let’s go up! 👊🏼⚽️”
DID YOU KNOW?
Nunez’s lack of composure in key moments has led to frustration among supporters, with an increasing number beginning to doubt whether he can become the prolific striker Liverpool envisioned when they signed him for a hefty fee. He has found the net only six times while providing five assists in 35 outings across all competitions, with four of them coming in the Premier League.

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL & NUNEZ?
With a crucial fixture against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on the horizon, Liverpool will need a strong response from Nunez. The match presents an opportunity for the striker to silence his critics and prove that he can be a decisive player for the club in the title run-in. The Reds currently hold an eight-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the table. However, that gap could shrink to five points if Arsenal secure a win against West Ham on Saturday.
