Lionel Messi back to Barcelona? Sensational ‘can’t leave football’ transfer claim as Argentine superstar enters final year of his contract at MLS side Inter Miami

Rumours of Inter Miami star Lionel Messi returning to Barcelona are raging again courtesy of a “can’t leave football” transfer claim.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Argentine icon severed ties with the Liga giants in 2021. Much-publicised financial difficulties in Catalunya meant that Barca were unable to agree a new contract with their all-time top goalscorer, leading to him leaving for Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent.

After two years in France, Messi decided to go chasing the American dream in 2023. He is now on the books of MLS side Inter Miami and has helped them to Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield triumphs during his time in Florida, while landing himself an MVP award.

Alex Candal is the man that first reported on Messi heading to the United States. He has now suggested that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner wants to return to Barcelona before hanging up his boots. Candal, speaking to DSports, credits Messi as saying: “I can’t leave football without playing at the new Camp Nou.”

WHAT NEXT FOR LIONEL MESSI?

Messi could get that opportunity in an exhibition or friendly match, with those opportunities having been discussed at length. It may, however, be that he wants to rejoin the Blaugrana on a permanent basis – either at the end of the current calendar year or after gracing another World Cup with Argentina in 2026.
