VIDEO: Antony is a goal machine – Man Utd loanee scores stunning first-time volley for Real Betis against Real Sociedad as his sensational start to life in Spain continues

Antony showed his parent club Manchester United what they are missing as he thumped home a stunning first-time volley against Real Sociedad.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Antony’s fine form for Real Betis continued on Sunday night as he fired the home side in front with a powerful volleyed effort from the top of the box. A Betis corner was cleared by Sociedad only as far as the Brazilian, who was able to strike first-time low and through a mass of bodies into the net. The goal came after he had won a first-half penalty that was subsequently missed by fellow Premier League exile Giovani Lo Celso. The Brazilian then added an assist for Marc Roca’s second goal and Betis’ third. On the day United dropped to 15th in the Premier League, they may well be rueing the January departure of Antony, who now has three goals and two assists to his name across his first four games for Betis.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Antony’s move to United from Ajax in 2022 was arguably the worst transfer in Premier League history and he departed Old Trafford on loan as a resounding flop. The right-winger struggled for confidence and form at Old Trafford and was unable to repay any of the huge £85 million sum the Red Devils forked out for him. However, after a few goals and star performances, he may be on his way back to his best levels that first attracted the interest of United.

WHAT NEXT FOR ANTONY?

The Brazil international ended up winning Player of the Match for the third successive La Liga game as Betis beat Sociedad 3-0, and he will be hoping to maintain his scoring touch in the Europa League against Gent on Thursday. He will then get the chance to show how he has upped his performances on the biggest stage against Real Madrid in La Liga. Antony may only be on loan at Betis, but should he keep excelling, he will no doubt be interested in extending his stay in Spain.
