A$AP Rocky Chooses Not to Testify in Felony Assault Case
Rapper A$AP Rocky chose not to take the stand on Tuesday February 11th, during his trial, where he’s facing two felony assault charges related to an alleged shooting involving a former friend at a hotel in Los Angeles.
In the court session, the 36-year-old artist, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, decided to waive his right to testify in this high-profile case. Superior Judge Mark Arnold informed Rocky, “You understand you have a right to get on the stand and give your side of the case.” “Also, you have a right under the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution not to testify. You cannot be compelled to testify,” the judge added.
The judge added, “It’s totally your decision to either get on the stand or waive your right to testify.”
Rocky responded decisively, “I want my right to not testify”
According to USA Today, Rocky sat at the defense table alongside his lawyer, Joe Tacopina, who then concluded the defense’s case. The prosecution might call one more witness later that day, with closing arguments anticipated on Thursday.
Tacopina had mentioned on Monday that Rocky would either testify on Tuesday or the defense would rest. An attorney from the prosecution indicated they were ready for Rocky to possibly take the stand if needed.
Before the trial kicked off, Tacopina expressed that Rocky was “eager to tell his story” and would welcome the chance to do so. However, having defendants testify in their own criminal cases is often seen as a risky strategy in the U.S. legal system.
Rocky faces two felony assault charges involving a semiautomatic firearm after allegedly shooting in the direction of A$AP Relli, whose real name is Terell Ephron, following an argument near a Hollywood hotel on November 6, 2021. If found guilty on all counts, Rocky could face up to 24 years behind bars.
