Gene Hackman’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, has finally broken her silence at the age of 62, revealing new, emotional insights into the life and mysterious passing of her father.
Gene Hackman’s Death: A Tragic Discovery
Just days after the legendary actor’s death, Elizabeth opened up in an exclusive interview to discuss the events surrounding her father’s passing.
For years, the Hackman family had kept their private lives largely out of the public eye.
However, in the wake of Gene Hackman’s sudden and unexpected death, Elizabeth felt compelled to speak out and confirm some of the rumors circulating about what truly happened behind closed doors.
Hackman, who had lived a long and distinguished life, passed away at the age of 95.
The discovery was made on February 26, 2025, when a maintenance worker arrived at the couple’s home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, only to find the bodies of Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and one of their dogs.
The worker reported that they had last been in communication with the couple about two weeks before the tragic discovery, raising questions about how long they had been deceased.
Deputies from the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene shortly afterward.
They found Hackman’s body in the mudroom in an advanced state of decomposition, while Betsy Arakawa was discovered in a bathroom in a similar condition.
Around them, prescription medications for various conditions, including high blood pressure and thyroid issues, were scattered.
Among the somber details of the discovery was the lifeless body of one of the couple’s beloved dogs, a German Shepherd, found in a closet near Arakawa.
However, their two other dogs were found alive, providing a small glimmer of hope amid the tragedy.
The investigation quickly revealed no immediate signs of foul play, though the exact cause and time of death remained unclear.
Authorities did not find evidence of a carbon monoxide leak, ruling it out as a possible cause of death.
As the Hackman family struggled to come to terms with the loss of their beloved father, Elizabeth shared with the media that the family suspected carbon monoxide poisoning might be responsible for the deaths.
Elizabeth, along with her siblings, speculated that the couple may have passed away several days before being discovered.
Their suspicions were based on several troubling details: the bodies were found in an advanced state of decomposition, and a pacemaker retrieved from Hackman’s body suggested he had likely died on February 17, nearly two weeks before the bodies were discovered.
This revelation raised even more questions about the mysterious circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Despite the tragic and mysterious nature of the discovery, Elizabeth refrained from providing specifics about her father’s health, though it was known that he had been seen using a cane in his last public appearance nearly a year prior.
As the family processed the loss, they paid tribute to Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa in a heartfelt statement to the press.
In the statement, Elizabeth, along with her younger sister Leslie and granddaughter Annie, expressed their grief: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman, and his wife, Betsy.
He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us, he was always just Dad and Grandpa.
We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.
”
The words reflected not only their sorrow at the passing of a beloved family member but also the deep loss felt by fans worldwide who cherished Hackman’s extensive and impactful Hollywood career.
Despite the investigation into his death continuing, the Hackman family remained focused on each other during this painful time.
Elizabeth Hackman: A Life Away from the Spotlight
Elizabeth Jean Hackman, who was born in August 1962, is Gene Hackman’s middle child.
She is a private person who has largely stayed out of the public eye, unlike many other celebrity children.
Elizabeth grew up alongside her older brother Christopher Allen and her younger sister, Leslie Anne Hackman.
Although Gene Hackman’s fame as one of Hollywood’s most respected actors often put the family in the spotlight, Elizabeth and her siblings opted to maintain a quiet life outside of the media’s glare.
While Elizabeth occasionally accompanied her father to public events during her younger years, such as the 1978 screening of Superman and the 1996 premiere of The Chamber, these appearances were rare.
Since then, Elizabeth has kept a low profile, making few, if any, public statements or appearances.
This decision has contributed to the mystery surrounding her family.
There is little known about her personal life, including her relationships, activities, or whether she participates in social media.
Gene Hackman himself was also known for his preference for privacy, especially after retiring from acting.
Despite being one of the most famous actors of his generation, Hackman chose to live a peaceful, private life with his second wife, Betsy Arakawa, whom he married in 1991.
Hackman and Arakawa found peace in their life together in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The couple’s home, nestled atop a 12-acre hill, offered stunning views of the surrounding mountain ranges.
It was here that they spent their final years together, away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood.
Hackman, who had long retired from acting, embraced this quieter life and became involved in the local arts scene.
Despite leaving Hollywood, he remained active in the community and supported various cultural events in the area.
Hackman’s journey to Hollywood stardom was not conventional.

He faced many hardships early in his life, but his resilience and determination pushed him to become one of the most celebrated actors in film history.
His career was marked by iconic performances in The French Connection, Unforgiven, and The Royal Tenenbaums, and he earned numerous accolades for his work, including Academy Awards and Golden Globe nominations.
In the later years of his career, Hackman transitioned from acting to writing, publishing several novels.
He also briefly returned to narrate documentaries, further showcasing his versatility.
Although he retired from acting in 2004, Gene Hackman’s legacy continues to live on, both through his memorable performances and the impact he had on the world of cinema.
Elizabeth and her family, despite their grief, are determined to honor his legacy while they seek clarity about the circumstances of his passing.
