In a moment that blended humor with tension, Ryan Reynolds took the stage during the 50th anniversary special of “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) to deliver a joke that has since ignited a firestorm of reactions on social media.

The joke, which referenced the ongoing legal battle between his wife, Blake Lively, and actor-director Justin Baldoni, was met with both laughter and criticism, highlighting the complexities of celebrity culture and the public’s fascination with scandal.

During the live show, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Reynolds stood up to ask a question.

After a brief exchange about how he was doing, he quipped, “Great.

Why? What have you heard?” This playful jab at the swirling rumors surrounding his wife and Baldoni drew laughter from the audience, including a visibly amused Lively.

However, as the joke unfolded, her expression shifted from amusement to concern, reflecting the gravity of the situation offstage.

The joke was interpreted by many as a direct reference to the ongoing drama involving Lively and Baldoni, particularly in light of the serious allegations that have emerged in recent months.

While some fans appreciated the humor, others criticized Reynolds for making light of a sensitive issue that has been dominating headlines.

The backdrop to this SNL moment is a tumultuous legal battle that began on December 31, when Baldoni filed a staggering $250 million lawsuit against The New York Times.

The lawsuit was in response to the newspaper’s coverage of Lively’s allegations of sexual harassment against Baldoni, as well as claims that he and others orchestrated a smear campaign against her.

Lively subsequently filed her own federal lawsuit, reiterating her claims and asserting that Baldoni’s legal actions were an attempt to silence her.

Baldoni’s lawsuit accuses the Times of libel, invasion of privacy, and breach of contract, claiming that the publication relied on Lively’s “unverified and self-serving narrative.

” In a statement, a spokesperson for The New York Times defended their reporting, emphasizing that it was based on thorough investigation and documentation.

The fallout from Reynolds’ joke has been swift and varied.

Social media platforms erupted with mixed reactions, with some users supporting Reynolds’ lighthearted approach while others condemned it as insensitive given the serious nature of the allegations.

Comments ranged from those praising the ability to find humor in tough situations to critiques of the couple for trivializing a matter that has significant implications for all parties involved.

Users pointed out that while comedy can serve as a coping mechanism, it can also risk downplaying the severity of real-life issues, especially in cases involving allegations of harassment and legal disputes.

Critics argued that making jokes about such a serious topic can contribute to a culture that dismisses the experiences of victims.

This incident brings to light the intricate relationship between celebrity culture and public scrutiny.

In an age where every action of public figures is dissected online, the line between humor and insensitivity becomes increasingly blurred.

The pressures of maintaining a public persona while navigating personal crises can lead to complex dynamics, as seen in the reactions to Reynolds’ joke.

Moreover, the legal battles between Lively and Baldoni have captivated audiences not just for their content but for the personalities involved.

Both actors are well-known figures with substantial fan bases, and their conflicts have become fodder for public discussion.

The intertwining of personal and professional lives in the public eye raises questions about privacy, accountability, and the ethics of entertainment.

Ryan Reynolds Hints At Sour Mood Amid Blake Lively Scandal

As the legal drama unfolds, the stakes continue to rise.

Baldoni’s defamation lawsuit against Lively, Reynolds, and Lively’s publicist seeks no less than $400 million in damages, further complicating the narrative.

The accusations and counter-accusations have created a volatile environment, with both sides publicly defending their positions while simultaneously airing grievances.

Lively’s legal team has responded to Baldoni’s claims by asserting that his lawsuit does not change the validity of her allegations.

They emphasize that the ongoing legal battles are not merely a matter of public relations but are rooted in serious accusations that deserve attention and respect.

The intersection of humor and serious issues is a delicate balance, particularly in the realm of celebrity culture.

Ryan Reynolds’ joke at SNL may have elicited laughter in the moment, but it also opened the door to a broader conversation about the implications of making light of serious allegations.

As the legal battles continue and public interest remains high, it is essential to navigate these conversations with sensitivity and awareness of the real-life consequences that often lie beneath the surface of celebrity scandals.

In the end, while laughter can be a powerful tool for coping with difficult situations, it is crucial to remember the weight of the issues at hand.

The ongoing saga between Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, and the media serves as a reminder that behind the glitz and glamour, there are real people facing real challenges.

As the public watches closely, the hope is for a resolution that acknowledges the complexities of the situation while respecting the experiences of those involved.

For his night out, Ryan Reynolds opted to go for a classic look with a personal twist.

The Deadpool star attended the SNL50: The Anniversary Special in New York City alongside his wife, Blake Lively, on Sunday, Feb. 16.

For the star-studded event, Reynolds, 48, rocked a Thom Sweeney midnight navy shawl lapel dinner suit that retails for $2,745, a white Cotton Poplin Point Collar shirt that retails for $440, a black silk bow tie that retails for $200 and Calf Leather Oxford Shoes in black, which retail for $650. All told, Reynolds’ look cost just over $4,000.

n addition to his designer duds, the Canadian actor added a meaningful accessory to the ensemble.

On his lapel was a small white and red pin, which represents Reynolds’ Order of Canada honor, which he received in December 2024. The red center is a Canadian maple leaf. The lapel badge comes in different colors signifying different levels.

When Reynolds received the honor back in December, he shared how moved he was by the accolade.

“Today I received the incredible honour of appointment to the Order of Canada. I couldn’t be more emotional and proud of this moment,” Reynolds said in a statement exclusively obtained by PEOPLE at the time.

“I’m so grateful to be a part of the ever-evolving Canadian story. Even more grateful to my third parent: the communities across the country who have supported and shaped me. As well as all the people across Canada who do the work of helping people each and every day without recognition or pats on the back. I’m asking the Governor General if I can break my officer’s medal into thousands of little pieces to share,” he continued.
