“You have no West without women”: Kevin Costner’s Horizon Movies Have a Clear Advantage Over Yellowstone

Kevin Costner’s Horizon takes the Western beyond Yellowstone, putting women at the heart of the story in a way Taylor Sheridan never did.

Kevin Costner didn’t just ride into the Western genre; he built a whole frontier.

But while Yellowstone made him the king of modern cowboy drama, his Horizon films aimed for something bigger.

Unlike Taylor Sheridan’s testosterone-fueled ranch wars, Costner’s Horizon puts women at the heart of the story.

In a genre often dominated by rugged outlaws and stoic cowboys, Horizon stood out by giving women a voice, making it a Western with more heart and history than most.

Kevin Costner knew the West had more to say.

While Yellowstone gave audiences a gritty, modern ranch drama, his Horizon films took a different route – one where women weren’t just supporting characters.

They were the story.

Unlike Yellowstone, where female leads were few and far between, Horizon: An American Saga centered on the untold struggles of frontier women.

Frances Kittredge (Sienna Miller) and her daughter Elizabeth (Georgia MacPhail) were shaping the West.

Their journey, filled with tragedy and resilience, gave Horizon its emotional depth.

Costner put it plainly (via Decider):

I think it’s interesting that the movie came out six months ago and people are still finding it with little push from anywhere.

It’s out there.

It’s standing amongst the biggest movies of the year and it was streamed more than them.

It tells me that people want to go places in their heart and their mind.

He added,

This American Western specifically has women in it.

When we started writing it, women kept dominating my storyline.

You have no West without women.

But they were often drug out there against their will, and they just had to live in the fear and the dirt and everything, trying to keep their families clean.

But making an epic Western in today’s Hollywood wasn’t easy.

Horizon: Chapter 1 struggled at the box office, earning just $38.7 million against its massive budget.

Still, Costner had faith.

And streaming proved him right.

After hitting Max and Netflix, the film skyrocketed, landing in the Netflix Top 10 and pulling 12 million hours watched in its first week alone, per reports.

For Kevin Costner, it wasn’t just about cowboys and gunfights.

It was about giving voice to those often left in the dust.

And this time, the women of the West are riding front and center.

Kevin Costner went from awestruck spectator to seatmate at Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special.

Days after a viral clip showed him mesmerized by Cher’s live performance, the Yellowstone star found himself sitting right beside the music icon at Studio 8H.

Dressed in a sleek black suit, Costner looked every bit the leading man next to Cher, who stunned in a beaded black dress.

Fans couldn’t get enough.

Of course, Cher’s boyfriend, Alexander Edwards, was also there, keeping things in check.

But after Costner’s high-profile divorce, the internet ran wild.

Whether fate or just good seating arrangements, it was a moment to remember.
