Scarlett Johansson’s final outing as Black Widow in the 2021 MCU flick Black Widow was supposed to be much darker before Marvel Studios decided to pull the plug on that storyline.

Ray Winstone, the actor who portrayed the villainous role of General Dreykov in the movie, revealed to Variety that he had to undergo reshoots because the original scenes involving him and the Black Widows were much darker.

I worked with this amazing director, Cate Shortland, and we worked on what my character was going to be.

He was like a pedophile running around all these girls, and they’d become Black Widows.

He continued,

We used to get applauded on set.

It was probably the best thing I’ve done for a really long time.

However, the angle was completely scrapped later on by Marvel, and they wanted him to reshoot the scenes with a lesser intensity.

That’s when Ray Winstone couldn’t hold back his opinion.

There have been several allegations against Marvel Studios of being ‘woke’ in order to sell tickets.

Even Marvel President Kevin Feige had to step in for that matter.

However, Ray Winstone was ruthless in his talks when he revealed that Marvel Studios only cared for selling tickets rather than selling cinematic stories and theatrical experiences.

It’s all about selling tickets.

We see what’s happening in Hollywood with Marvel and all that kind of stuff… There is room for it, and it’s fun, but it takes away from getting cultural films made.

After filming his scenes for the first time, Ray Winstone was called in for a second time to reshoot all of his scenes, which frustrated the actor beyond measure.

He even almost told Marvel to recast his character, but couldn’t do so because he had a contract to honor.

However, that wasn’t the only thing wrong with Black Widow, since the film was riddled with controversies and lawsuits, and was an improper farewell to Scarlett Johansson’s MCU legacy.

Black Widow Was an Improper Farewell to Scarlett Johansson’s MCU Legacy

Other than the fact that Scarlet Johansson had to literally sue Disney to get her earnings, Black Widow was a mish-mash of things that felt like an improper farewell to Scarlett Johansson’s legacy in the MCU.

The timing of the release of Black Widow was really off since the film was released simultaneously in theaters as well as streaming on Disney+. It felt more like a passing-the-baton movie instead of a true solo film that was supposed to focus on Natasha Romanoff.

Ray Winstone’s portrayal as the villain felt underwhelming in some scenes (which wasn’t his fault). Naturally, the film felt more like a formality film rather than a proper farewell to Scarlett Johansson’s legacy in the MCU.
