“My mom fancied you”: Princess Diana’s Secret Confession for Kevin Costner After Demanding a Kissing Scene in Unmade Sequel

‘The Bodyguard’ almost got itself a royal sequel until tragedy struck and Kevin Costner was left dealing with the royal family all by himself.

Women falling for their bodyguards seems to be the new hot trope these days, especially among readers.

There’s just something about a stoic, unfazed man becoming head over heels for the woman he’s supposed to protect!

However, even though this trope seems to be all the rage these days, Kevin Costner had already done it back in 1992.

Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston starred in Mick Jackson’s The Bodyguard, a story about an Oscar-nominated superstar being sent death threats by a stalker.

It was a box office success and a total feel-good flick.

There were some talks about making a sequel to the movie with, wait for it, Princess Diana herself.

In fact, Princess Diana was even ready for a kissing scene with Kevin Costner.

Earlier in June, Kevin Costner stopped by for a chat with Howard Stern on The Howard Stern Show where the topic of The Bodyguard’s sequel was brought up.

When the host asked him if he was going to make a sequel with Princess Diana, Costner did not deny it at all.

So, what happened? Well, after she had apparently agreed to be a part of the film alongside Costner, she passed away in a tragic car accident on August 31, 1997.

After that, the actor simply had no interest in making The Bodyguard’s sequel without her.

During the interview, he stated,

I said, ‘Look, I’m going to do ‘Bodyguard 2’ and I think I can build this around you.

Would you be interested?’ And she said, she goes, ‘Yes, my life’s about to change.’

This was around the time Princess Diana and Prince Charles were going through a divorce.

Costner revealed that while talking about the sequel, Princess Diana enquired if there would be a kissing scene between her and the actor.

When Costner asked if she would want to take part in one, she was completely on board with the idea.

She was very sweet and we talked.

And the second time we talked, she said, ‘Is there going to be a kissing scene?’ And I said, ‘Do you want there to be one?’ And she said, ‘Yeah.’ And I said, ‘Then we’ll do that.’

Unfortunately, we never got to see Costner and Princess Diana’s chemistry on-screen as she passed away before the production could begin.

Kevin Costner Never Made the Sequel After Princess Diana’s Death

After Princess Diana’s death, the news of the sequel that never came to fruition was leaked, and needless to say, the royal family was not happy about it at all.

In fact, they denied the entire idea that the late Princess was ever going to be in a film with Costner.

Costner told Howard,

It leaked out that I had been prepping ‘Bodyguard 2’ with her.

And what happened was the royal family kind of turned on me a little bit and was like, you know, ‘No.

That’s not true.’

When it all died down, he recalled having a sweet conversation with Prince William where the latter recalled how his mother had “fancied” the actor.

He looked at me and he said, ‘My mom fancied you,’ And it was the sweetest, gentlest thing.

Costner has always been vocal about not wanting to do sequels as it would bother him quite a bit if they did not do as good as the original flicks.

In an interview with Spin1038, Costner stated,

What happens is that I really respect the movies I did and if the sequel is not as good I won’t do it.

I need to see the script, because if someone likes The Bodyguard and I make The Bodyguard 2, or Tin Cup 2 or Bull Durham 2 or Dances With Wolves 2 and 3, and they’re not as good, then it’s going to bother me.
That’s probably not great business advice – someone would say, ‘Do it.

Do the second one, do the third one – are you nuts?!’ I guess probably I am.

But he was clearly ready to make a sequel with Princess Diana.

It looks like even Costner was fine bending his will for the charm of the Princess.

When she later passed away, he uprooted the entire idea of a sequel.

In his own words, “I never made that movie because I could not replace Princess Di.” Well, how does one even move on from Princess Diana?

The Bodyguard is available to rent/buy on Prime Video.
