Leonardo DiCaprio Will Star in His First True Horror For 8th Movie With Martin Scorsese

Leonardo DiCaprio reunites with Martin Scorsese for the upcoming horror film What Happens at Night, co-starring Jennifer Lawrence.

Leonardo DiCaprio is set to team up with director Martin Scorsese once again, but this time for something very different: a horror movie.

As per Deadline, the film will be based on Peter Cameron’s spooky novel What Happens at Night and will mark DiCaprio’s first leap into the horror genre.

So far, it has been reported that production will commence in January.

Apple Original Films and Studiocanal are working together to bring the adaptation to life.

Additionally, it has been revealed that the movie will reunite Leonardo DiCaprio with Jennifer Lawrence, who is set to play the female lead.

It’ll be their second collaboration since Netflix’s Don’t Look Up in 2021.

Meanwhile, although major details are still under wraps, the news is already making a huge buzz.

What Is Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night About? 

Martin Scorsese is set to adapt Peter Cameron’s What Happens at Night which narrates the tale of an American couple who travel to a bizarre, snowy European city to adopt a baby.

However, as the story unravels, the couple starts struggling to claim their baby while simultaneously feeling overwhelmed with their marriage and their life.

The official synopsis of the book via Variety,

It’s a difficult journey that leaves the wife, who is struggling with cancer, desperately weak, and her husband worries that her illness will prevent the orphanage from releasing their child.

On arrival, the couple checks into the cavernous and eerily deserted Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel. 

It also said,

The bar is always open and the lobby populated with an enigmatic cast of characters ranging from an ancient, flamboyant chanteuse to a debauched businessman to an enigmatic faith healer.

Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself. 

Now, based on the official synopsis of the book, since Leonardo DiCaprio has already been cast, we can assume that he’s going to play the husband, who is worried about his wife’s illness and their chance to adopt a baby.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence will play the wife, who is battling cancer but still trying to hold on to hope.

As for the side characters, Scorsese has a history of picking great supporting actors.

So perhaps the flamboyant chanteuse could be played by an experienced actress like Cate Blanchett or Lady Gaga.

As for the mysterious faith healer, Scorsese could hire someone like Adam Driver, or even Nicole Kidman (a cue to her Hulu show, Nine Perfect Strangers).

But overall, the big question remains whether Martin Scorsese will stick to the original novel.

Well, while he mostly stays true to the heart of the story, we can only expect him to do the same with What Happens at Night.

Most likely, he will turn it into a slow-burning thriller with strong emotions, giving the horror story a very human touch.

Leonardo DiCaprio Edges Closer to Robert De Niro’s Record With 8th Martin Scorsese Film

Meanwhile, the upcoming horror will mark yet another highly anticipated collaboration between Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese, who have built one of the most successful partnerships in Hollywood.

From Gangs of New York to Killers of the Flower Moon, they have teamed up for six feature films and a 2015 short film, The Audition.

Now with What Happens at Night, DiCaprio will be starting his eighth project with Scorsese.

That is a huge achievement that shows how much trust they have in each other.

Previously, Robert De Niro used to be the actor most linked to Martin Scorsese.

Over three decades, he has starred in 10 feature films and one short film with the director.

Classics like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas shaped not just Scorsese’s career but also De Niro’s reputation as one of the greatest actors ever.

But now, DiCaprio is catching up fast.

With eight movies together, he is only three films away from matching De Niro’s record.

And if Scorsese continues directing, DiCaprio might even surpass De Niro’s number.
