As a result, reports suggest that Costner is in deep financial trouble and hopes that one company will help him recover from it.

Kevin Costner reportedly hoping Netflix will swoop in to save Horizon: An American Saga

Kevin Costner played the role of John Dutton in Yellowstone before his falling out with creator Taylor Sheridan led to his exit from the series.

During his public feud with Sheridan, Costner started working on the Horizon franchise, which was described as his dream project.

However, the first installment fared poorly at the box office, and the already-filmed second installment was pulled from the release schedule.

A source close to the actor recently revealed to Life & Style that Costner was now allegedly hoping Netflix would pick up the franchise.

Kevin and his team need it to perform because right now, Netflix is the only company with deep enough pockets to completely bail him out of the hole Kevin has dug for himself with these movies.

The insider made the above statement, explaining that the first installment, which recently landed on the streaming service needed to perform well on the platform for Netflix to get involved with the franchise.

The film entered the list of Netflix’s global top 10 movies shortly after its launch on the service but fell out after just one week (via Netflix).

Similarly, it spent two weeks in Netflix’s US top 10 movies list before also dropping off.

Hence, the chances of Netflix bailing Costner out seem extremely small at this point.

In the same report, the insider also stated that the Horizon franchise, which filmed two installments back-to-back had been financially, physically, and even intellectually stressful for the veteran actor.

As a result, Costner’s passion project has turned into a deep hole of his own doing.

Costner made the above statement (via Deadline) at last year’s Venice Film Festival, highlighting his commitment to the franchise.

The third installment in the franchise commenced filming in May 2024 with a fourth installment also planned.

As a result, it seems like a real uphill battle for Costner to realize his vision for the ambitious epic Western saga.

Nonetheless, the second installment will hold its US premiere at the upcoming Santa Barbara Film Fest (via The Hollywood Reporter), which should bring some reprieve to Costner.
