Kevin Costner Reveals How He Taught Son Cayden About ‘Not Letting Go of His Dream’ in Making

The actor is a dad to seven kids: Annie, Lily, Joe, Liam, Cayden, Hayes and Grace

Kevin Costner is teaching his son a valuable life lesson.

While speaking with Hollywood Authentic about his new film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, the actor, 69, revealed that he shared his hardworking journey to creating the movie with his 17-year-old son Cayden.

“It’s been a perfect experience, really,” he told the outlet of the four days the father-son duo spent at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where the movie premiered.

“He’s seen me labor over the course of this movie.

For his entire life he’s known that I’ve talked about this thing,” the dad of six said of Cayden.

“And then to see me not let go of the opportunity, and the hope of it, and to actually go out and make two of them – he was able to see the culmination of that.”

He continued, “It’s a weird thing when you look at your dad, I think, and see suddenly this movie playing, and the people standing and clapping for it.

I think, maybe, he saw something in not letting go of a dream, and that you keep pushing.”

The Yellowstone star shares Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 14, with his now-estranged wife, designer Christine Baumgartner.

He’s also a dad to three adult children — Annie, 40, Lily, 37, and Joe, 36 — with his ex-wife Cindy Silva, as well as son Liam, 26, with former partner Bridget Rooney.

In June, Costner spoke with Access Hollywood at the premiere of the saga’s first movie Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1, where he was joined by his son Hayes, who also appears in the film.

When asked about what it was like working with his dad, Hayes didn’t hold back praising Costner.

“It was so fun.

Just working with my dad, I loved it,” Hayes shared.

“He just taught me everything and he was there directing by my side and it was just amazing to watch him direct because I’ve never seen it before.

I’ve only seen him act before.”

Costner appeared to get emotional hearing his son’s words, and when asked how it felt to hear that kind of praise from his son, the actor shared, “It feels good.” Holding back tears, Costner put on sunglasses and placed an arm around his son as they continued the interview.
