Kevin Costner Reacts to John Mulaney’s Field of Dreams Bit at the Oscars 35 Years After the Movie

Yes, Kevin Costner caught John Mulaney’s Field of Dreams bit at the 2024 Oscars.

During the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, comedian Mulaney took an opportunity to recap the entire plot of the 1989 baseball-centric Costner film while he presented the award for best sound to The Zone of Interest.

While Field of Dreams was not up for any awards on Sunday, Mulaney — known for detailing his favorite movies in his standup comedy act — jokingly pitched that the movie should have won best picture at this year’s Oscars ceremony.

Costner, 69, seemingly approved of Mulaney’s bit: he shared a video of Mulaney’s appearance to his Instagram Story on Tuesday and wrote in a caption to the video, “Not a bad summary, @johnmulaney.”

“Congrats to all the nominees and winners at @theacademy Awards Sunday night,” the two-time Oscar winner added in his post. “So many great performances to celebrate this year.”

Costner holds two Oscars for directing and producing his 1990 movie Dances with Wolves and also received a nomination at the 1991 ceremony for starring in that film.

In Field of Dreams, Costner stars as a corn farmer in Iowa named Ray who has a vision to build a baseball field at “Shoeless” Joe Jackson’s (Ray Liotta) behest.

He then interacts with the ghosts of various baseball legends as a means of healing Ray’s relationship with his late father.

Mulaney, 41, introduced his thoughts on Field of Dreams onstage at the Oscars while joking about the importance of sound in film history.

“Without sound, we wouldn’t have been able to hear such classic lines as ‘You’re going to need a bigger boat,’ ‘I’ll have what she’s having,’ and, ‘He was in the Amazon with my mother when she was researching spiders just before she died,’ ” he added, referencing Jaws, When Harry Met Sally and poking fun at Sony’s recent superhero movie Madame Web.

“Or what about that moment in Field of Dreams where we hear ‘If you build it, he will come,’ and then Costner does it, he builds a baseball field,” Mulaney added. “Or I guess he doesn’t build it — he mows down corn, and then there is a field and he’s like, ‘I’m going to watch ghosts play baseball,’ and the bank is like, ‘You wanna pay your mortgage?’ And he’s like, ‘Nah, I’m gonna watch ghosts play baseball.’ “

“I love Field of Dreams, that should win Best Picture — though they’ll probably go with one of this year’s,” Mulaney joked after he recapped much of the movie’s plot. The comedian then presented the award for Best Sound to The Zone of Interest, which also won best international feature at Sunday’s awards show.
