During a Cannes press conference, actor and filmmaker Kevin Costner expressed his frustration over the hardships he faced while making Horizon: An American Saga (via Variety):

I don’t know why it’s so hard to get people to believe in the movie I wanted to make.

I don’t think anybody’s else’s movie is better than mine.

I made it for people.

He noted a similar pattern with his other movies, such as Dances With WolvesBull DurhamField of Dreams, and Open Range, and that these titles were difficult to make.

My problem is that I don’t fall out of love with something that’s good,” he shared.

Costner shamelessly revealed that he asked a lot of billionaires to fund his film, perceiving how difficult it was to persuade people.

He also revealed his interest in making a third installment.

I’d like to come back here with my third movie.

I’m trying to make the third one.

I knocked on every boat in Cannes to help me.

The guys say, ‘C’mon, we’ll get a picture.’ I said.

‘No, get your checkbook out.’

Costner told Deadline that he will shell out $98 million for the first three Horizon films, and the final installment will cost him around a total of $100 million.

The actor also used his own money to fund the project, claiming: “I don’t need four homes.

I’ll risk those homes to make my movies.”

Horizon: An American Saga premiered at Cannes Film Festival on Sunday where Kevin Costner received the warmest standing ovation.

He directed, wrote, and starred in the film.

He stated (via HuffPost):

Such good people.

Such a good moment, not just for me but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me, who continued to work.

It’s a funny business and I’m so glad I found it.

There’s no place like here.

I’ll never forget this, neither will my children.

The star-studded cast includes Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Giovanni Ribisi, Ella Hunt, Jena Malone, Danny Huston, Michael Rooker, and Abbey Lee, among others.

The first chapter of the four-part epic saga covers “the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West,” as Warner Bros promptly described it.

The first part of the Horizon: An American Saga arrives in theaters on June 28 while the second installment premieres on August 16, perfectly timed for the celebration of Independence Day.
