Jada Pinkett Smith Plans to Celebrate 54th Birthday with Will Smith, Their Kids and ‘So Much Love’

“Will and Jada work on projects, see each other and are very much a family,” a film source tells PEOPLE

Jada Pinkett Smith is ringing in her birthday alongside her nearest and dearest.

The actress turned 54 on Thursday, Sept. 18. And according to a source, she is celebrating with Will Smith and their family, which includes the pair’s son Jaden Smith, 27, and daughter Willow Smith, 24. (Will is also dad to son Trey Smith, 32.)

Despite living apart since 2016, Jada and Will, 56, “work on projects, see each other and are very much a family,” a film source tells PEOPLE.

“They have a lot of love and respect for each other, and they are intertwined with work and family,” the latter insider adds.

There are certainly plenty of milestones to celebrate in the Smith family, as Jaden recently landed a job as men’s creative director of the popular French luxury fashion brand Christian Louboutin, marking a major (and high-profile) career shift.

The first source tells PEOPLE that his parents are very proud of Jaden, adding, “As always, there’s so much love in that family.”

Will and Jada married in December 1997, having met on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

They welcomed son Jaden the following July.

He was their first child together, while Will already shared son Trey with ex-wife Sheree Zampino.

Will and Jada expanded their family with the addition of their daughter Willow in October 2000.

Back in October 2023, Jada revealed on the Today show that she and Will had been living separate lives since 2016.

The Girls Trip actress also said she “made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce,” adding, “We will work through … whatever.”

The pair were last spotted together in a rare appearance earlier this month, going for a meal at Nobu in Malibu, California.

The Sept. 6 outing came 10 months after they were last seen together in public, while leaving Crossroads Kitchen in Calabasas.

Ahead of the release of her memoir Worthy in 2023, Jada exclusively revealed to PEOPLE that she and Will had been doing “some really heavy-duty work together” while figuring out their relationship.

“We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us,” she said of herself and the Oscar winner.

“I’m going to be by his side … but also allow him to have to figure this out for himself.”

In honor of Mother’s Day this year, Will shared a heartfelt and all-encompassing tribute on Instagram to both mothers of his children, with a photo post featuring both Jada and Zampino, 57, as well as his own mother, Caroline Bright, and Jada’s mom, Adrienne “Gammy” Banfield-Norris.

“Sending Love to all the Mothers of the world,” Will captioned his May 11 post, on which Zampino commented, “Love you!!!!”
