While Titanic was his big break, it is his roles in Martin Scorsese’s movies that have truly shown the excellent range and versatility he possesses.

Despite working with directors like James Cameron and Steven Spielberg, the Shutter Island star hails Scorsese as the director who saved him and propelled him to the success he holds today.

Leonardo DiCaprio has had an impressive filmography track that many actors can only dream of.

From his early roles on TV to his role in James Cameron‘s Titanic, DiCaprio proved that he is a force to be reckoned with.

However, his early roles were more of the ‘pretty boy’ roles and none had the intensity or versatility that could have helped DiCaprio prove his might as an actor.

Even after starring in movies like Steven Spielberg‘s Catch Me If You Can, DiCaprio felt he needed to do more to break free from roles that could typecast him or restrict him as an actor.

In that moment of desperation, DiCaprio found Martin Scorsese, somebody whom he had always wanted to work with.

“He had a way of immersing you in his filmmaking that just really stood out to me, as a young actor.

I remember saying to myself, ‘Someday I want to do something that good.’ I want to be able to be in one scene of his films.”.

DiCaprio had stated once while talking to Collider.

In a separate interview with Deseret News, he called the celebrated filmmaker his savior.

“He saved me.

I was headed down a path of being one kind of actor, and he helped me become another one.

The one I wanted to be.”.

And ever since the two joined hands their collaboration has bore some of the most impressive pieces of cinematography known to the world.

Not every actor’s biggest fear is failure.

For actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, for whom acting comes as naturally as breathing, getting typecast in a certain category of roles and genre makes up their deepest darkest nightmares.

While the actor has acted in several outstanding movies and did a wide array of exemplary roles, he thinks his breakthrough movie, Titanic, restricted him as an actor.

He explained his reasoning in an interview with The Guardian.

“It’s a really obvious thing to say, but the more people know too much about who you really are, and it’s a fundamental thing, the more the mystery is taken away from the artist, and the harder it is for people to believe that person in a particular role.”

Even though for a while the movie made it harder for the audience to see him in diverse roles, Leonardo DiCaprio has always been grateful for the movie and how it helped him in his career.
