“I laughed like a 12-year-old girl”: Matt Damon Will Never Forget How Kind Kevin Costner Was to Him During ‘Field of Dreams’ When He Was a Nobody

Matt Damon recounted the excitement he felt when Kevin Costner met him and Ben Affleck when they were extras on the sets of Field of Dreams.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were still struggling actors when they hit big with the drama Good Will Hunting.

The duo wrote the script and sold it on the condition that they would get to star in the film, which paid off as the film made $225 million against a $10 million budget.

It also won them the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Before their breakthrough, however, Damon and Affleck reportedly were extras on the sets of Kevin Costner’s Field of Dreams.

Damon reportedly recalled his time on the sets of the sports drama and mentioned how Costner would be kind enough to meet with the extras.

One comment from Costner reportedly made him giggle hard.

While he is not getting stranded in a strange place with a rescue team on their way to save him, Matt Damon has been a part of some truly incredible films that have propelled his career to new heights.

The actor had his breakthrough with the drama Good Will Hunting and went on to star in the Bourne franchise.

However, even before his breakthrough, Damon and his creative partner and star Ben Affleck set to break into the industry together.

They reportedly found themselves on the set of Kevin Costner’s Field of Dreams as extras.

Starring Costner and the late James Earl Jones, the legendary film is still remembered to this day for its endearing message.

Damon recalled meeting Costner on the sets of the film.

Writing to Jimmy Kimmel when Costner appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Damon said,

I literally had an Untouchables poster on my wall…[Costner] came out and hung around with the extras between set-ups.

I asked him what he was doing and he said, ‘Shootin’ the s—.’ And I laughed like a 12-year-old girl.

The two future stars were reportedly part of a crowd of 3,000 at the Fenway Park stadium which is prominently featured in the film.

It is one thing to remember one’s heroes as a fan and the time you met them, but it becomes extra special when the heroes themselves remember meeting you years later. That is what happened to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck when Kevin Costner mentioned that he remembered them from the set of Field of Dreams.

Costner reportedly had the habit of meeting he extras and hanging out with him while on set and the Yellowstone star recalled on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he recalled Damon and Affleck as young, enthusiastic college students. He said,

I did remember it. They were sitting in the stands, like college guys. And they would both lean in at the same time, lean back at the same time, look at each other at the same time. We talked and they had this big enthusiasm. They were on fire.

It surely would have been an honor for the Bourne star to know that his teenage hero remembered him when he was still an extra among 3,000 people.
