“I grew up in a rough neighborhood”: Leonardo DiCaprio’s Childhood Was Full of Chaos and Fist Fights

The Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio is always known for playing a wide variety of roles.

The Hollywood megastar’s career features a massive list of amazingly executed blockbuster hit films.

His portrayals in a variety of movies including period dramas, biographical films, and even sci-fi thrillers like Titanic, Shutter Island, The Revenant, Inception, etc, are what set him apart in the industry.

The actor achieved international stardom with the star-crossed romances Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Titanic (1997).

He started acting at an early age and now has become one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood.

But his childhood wasn’t even half as glamorous as his life is now.

In an interview with Short List, the interviewer asked Leonardo DiCaprio, “Have you ever been in a real fight?” Over the question, the actor quipped, “Yes, I have! (Laughs) Yep.”

He then went on to say that he “grew up in a kind of neighborhood that was rough.” So, he always engaged in fights and ended up being with other tough guys.

“Oh, you know, I mean, in junior high and high school, I grew up in kind of a rough neighbourhood and I was much smaller than I am now.

I didn’t go through my growth spurt until I was 15 years old.

So I always sort of had to fight my way to have credibility in school and ended up with other, tougher guys.”

The Hollywood star continued that he got in a lot of fights when he was in school, which dragged him outside the school as well.

“So I got in lots and lots of fights in school.

And sometimes it carried on to after school as well, but I’m pretty level-headed for the most part.

I don’t ever look for it, ever, and I don’t condone it.

And it’s never something that feels good after it, that’s for sure.”

Although young DiCaprio did feel bad after engaging in such fights, it’s sure that he was definitely no less than a fighter as a kid.

Leonardo DiCaprio was born and raised in California, but his life was far away from all the glamour.

His career might have started at a very young age, but it wasn’t easy for him to earn a livelihood at that time.

He also said that he didn’t grow up with a golden spoon – “It came from the fact that I grew up very poor, and I got to see the other side of the spectrum,” he told the Los Angeles Times.

The Titanic star also told the Digital Spy:

“My mother and I lived at Hollywood and Western – a drug dealer and pr*stitute corner.

It was pretty terrifying.

I got beat up a lot.

I saw people having s*x in the alleys.

I remember I was five years old and this guy with a trenchcoat, needles, and crack cornered me.”.

The actor had a tough upbringing in an area filled with drug dealers and pr*stitutes.

He described these experiences as “pretty terrifying.”.

Despite playing a character, Jordan Belfort, who got into trouble with drugs and wealth, DiCaprio credits his upbringing which made it easy for him to avoid any negative aspects that sometimes came his way.
