President Trump Announces Tariff Cuts on Chinese Imports Following Meeting with Xi Jinping
On Thursday, President Donald Trump revealed plans to reduce tariffs on imports from China after a significant meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan, South Korea.
This announcement came as both leaders discussed various issues, including fentanyl enforcement, agricultural trade, and limitations on rare-earth exports.
The meeting marked the conclusion of Trump’s Asia trip, which included visits to Malaysia and Japan, and aimed to ease the ongoing economic tensions between the United States and China.

Background on Tariffs and Trade Relations
Since taking office, President Trump has imposed substantial tariffs on Chinese goods, a move that prompted China to tighten its control over the export of rare earth elements.
The relationship between the two nations has been characterized by economic friction, and both leaders expressed a desire to de-escalate tensions to prevent further disruptions to the global economy.
Prior to the summit, aides from both sides indicated that discussions would revolve around critical issues such as tariffs, technology exports, and competition in supply chains.
Trump expressed optimism that the two nations could find common ground during their discussions.
Key Outcomes of the Meeting
Following the talks, Trump described the meeting as “amazing,” stating that both sides had reached “an outstanding group of decisions” on vital economic and security matters.
He announced that Xi had agreed to initiate immediate purchases of U.S. soybeans and other agricultural products.
Additionally, China committed to making significant efforts to prevent fentanyl from entering the United States.
Trump confirmed that he would lower the tariff rate on Chinese imports by 10 percentage points, reducing it from 20% to 10%.
However, an aide clarified that the actual rates would be closer to 45-47%, contingent upon Xi’s pledge to combat the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.
“I believe he’s going to work very hard to stop the death that’s coming in,” Trump remarked.

Agreements on Rare Earth Exports
The two leaders also reached an understanding regarding rare earth exports.
China agreed to pause its planned export controls for one year, with the possibility of revisiting the agreement next year to determine its future.
Trump mentioned that discussions also touched on semiconductor technology, noting that China would engage with Nvidia regarding additional chip purchases, although the latest advanced processors were not part of these talks.
Framework for Future Negotiations
The president characterized the results of the meeting as a framework agreement that would be renegotiated annually.
“We have a deal,” Trump stated confidently.
He indicated that he anticipated the agreement would remain in place for a long time, with plans for reciprocal visits between the two leaders.
Trump is scheduled to travel to China in April, while Xi is expected to visit the United States later in the year.
The meeting lasted approximately one hour and forty minutes, concluding with a brief photo opportunity before the leaders departed.
As cameras captured the moment, Trump leaned in to speak quietly with Xi before they shook hands and boarded their respective planes.
Remarks from Xi Jinping
During the meeting, Xi expressed warmth in seeing Trump again, acknowledging that occasional friction between major powers is natural.
He emphasized that the U.S. and China could still find ways to thrive alongside each other.
Earlier, while aboard Air Force One on the way to South Korea, Trump hinted at the possibility of reducing tariffs due to China’s cooperation in addressing fentanyl exports.
“I expect to be lowering that because I believe that they’re going to help us with the fentanyl situation,” he stated, adding that the relationship with China is currently “very good.”

Trump’s Reflections on the Meeting
In a post on Truth Social, Trump characterized his meeting with Xi as “truly great.”
He expressed gratitude for Xi’s authorization for China to begin purchasing substantial amounts of U.S. soybeans, sorghum, and other agricultural products.
Trump also noted that China had agreed to maintain the flow of rare earth elements and critical minerals, while committing to work diligently to halt the influx of fentanyl into the U.S.
Additionally, he mentioned that China would initiate the process of purchasing American energy resources.
Trump suggested that a significant deal involving Alaskan oil and gas could be on the horizon, stating, “In fact, a very large scale transaction may take place concerning the purchase of Oil and Gas from the Great State of Alaska.”
He concluded by asserting that the agreements reached would provide prosperity and security for millions of Americans.
Conclusion
President Trump’s meeting with Xi Jinping in South Korea resulted in significant developments regarding tariffs and trade relations between the U.S. and China.
The commitment to cut tariffs and address issues such as fentanyl and agricultural trade marks a potential turning point in their economic relationship.
As both nations look to build on this progress, the upcoming reciprocal visits and annual renegotiations could pave the way for a more stable and cooperative future.
The outcomes of this meeting reflect the complexities of international trade and diplomacy, showcasing the delicate balance that must be maintained between cooperation and competition.
With both leaders expressing a willingness to work together, the hope remains that these discussions will lead to lasting benefits for both countries and the global economy.
