According to Politico, Angelina Jolie made an unannounced trip to the city of Kherson on November 4, local time.
She visited in her capacity as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, aiming to support medical organizations in areas severely affected by the ongoing conflict.
This marks Jolie’s second visit to Ukraine since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, following her earlier trip to Lviv.
The Incident at the Military Checkpoint
While traveling to Kherson, Jolie’s convoy faced an unexpected situation at a military checkpoint near Yuzhnoukrainsk in the Mykolaiv region.
Reports state that local military recruitment officials stopped their vehicle as they attempted to enter the city.
Despite explaining that they were transporting a “significant person,” the driver, reportedly a bodyguard, was taken by military officers.
Jolie’s Attempt to Resolve the Situation
Footage circulated on Telegram appears to show Jolie personally arriving at the recruitment center to advocate for the release of the detained member.
Russian news agency TASS reported that the actress even attempted to contact the office of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to address the issue.
Initially, military sources in Ukraine informed TSN, a Ukrainian television channel, that Jolie’s presence at the recruitment center was unrelated to the detention.
They claimed she was merely seeking to use the restroom.
Clarification on the Detained Individual
However, subsequent statements revealed that the individual taken into custody was identified as a 1992-born Ukrainian citizen and a reserve officer.
He reportedly had no valid reason to defer his military service and was detained for processing related to mobilization.
Ultimately, Jolie had to leave the detained member behind and continue with her humanitarian mission.

A senior Ukrainian official informed Politico that a member of Jolie’s team had indeed encountered issues with local recruitment forces, but the precise circumstances remain unclear.
The official noted that the Maleficent star had not notified the Ukrainian government about her visit and had entered the country via land routes.
In a separate statement, the Ukrainian Army released a detailed four-paragraph announcement confirming that Jolie’s driver was called up for military service.
However, this statement was later deleted.
When asked by Politico, military representatives stated they could neither confirm nor deny the details of the incident.
