Ryan Evans, a name synonymous with custom car artistry, has captivated audiences for nearly a decade on the hit reality show *Counting Cars*.

Known for his extraordinary talent in transforming old, forgotten vehicles into breathtaking masterpieces, Evans has become a household name among car enthusiasts. But as the cameras have stopped rolling, the whispers surrounding his life have only intensified.

In the vibrant world of custom cars, Ryan’s journey began far from the glitz of Las Vegas. Born in Mount Vernon, Illinois, into a military family, he experienced a childhood filled with constant relocations.

This nomadic lifestyle shaped his resilience and curiosity, traits that would later fuel his passion for automotive art. Settling in Killeen, Texas, Ryan found solace in his parents’ garage, where he began to tinker with mechanical parts and dabble in painting.

“I would spend hours in that garage, covered in paint dust, completely lost in what I was doing,” Ryan recalls, a nostalgic smile crossing his face.

The car culture in Texas during the 1990s was a vibrant tapestry of roaring engines and candy-colored paint jobs, and Ryan soaked it all in.

By his teenage years, he was already experimenting with bold designs and intricate flames, quickly gaining a reputation as the go-to custom painter among his friends.

“I wanted to create something that wasn’t just a paint job; it was a statement,” he said, reflecting on the early days that laid the foundation for his career.

 

 

In 1996, at just 23 years old, Ryan made the bold decision to move to Los Angeles, the epicenter of the custom car scene. It was a gamble, but one he was willing to take. “I knew I had to be where the action was,” he explained.

“It was a place where creativity thrived.” Working odd jobs to make ends meet, Ryan honed his craft, drawing inspiration from legends like Von Dutch while developing a unique style that combined classic techniques with modern flair.

His big break came in 1999 when Shannon Aikau, a bike builder at Count’s Kustoms in Las Vegas, recognized Ryan’s potential. “I saw something in him that was special,” Shannon remembers.

“He had the eye, the passion, and the drive to take our work to the next level.” Ryan joined the team at Count’s Kustoms, and his life took a dramatic turn. The shop, known for its extravagant custom builds, was the perfect environment for Ryan to thrive.

As the lead painter at Count’s Kustoms, Ryan quickly became the creative force behind some of the shop’s most iconic projects. “Every car that rolled out of that shop had a piece of me in it,” he said.

His work was not just about applying paint; it was about storytelling through design. From the fiery flames of a classic Chevy to the futuristic graphics on a custom Camaro, Ryan’s artistry captured the imagination of fans worldwide.

 

 

In 2012, *Counting Cars* premiered on the History Channel, catapulting Ryan into the national spotlight.

Suddenly, he was no longer just a behind-the-scenes artist; he was a television star. “It was surreal,” Ryan admitted. “One moment, I was grinding away in the shop, and the next, millions of people were watching my work on TV.”

The show ran for ten successful seasons, showcasing Ryan’s talent and his quirky banter with fellow cast members, particularly his playful exchanges with Horny Mike.

However, fame came with its own set of challenges. Ryan balanced his newfound celebrity status with family life, marrying Dana Pauley and raising their son, Logan.

Away from the cameras, he remained grounded, cherishing time spent with his family and his beloved cats. “I’ve always been a family guy at heart,” Ryan said. “The show might have made me a star, but my family is my true legacy.”

As *Counting Cars* concluded its run in 2021, speculation began swirling about Ryan’s future. Whispers of tension behind the scenes, rumors of financial troubles, and even claims of personal struggles clouded his exit from the show.

“People love a good story, especially one filled with drama,” Ryan remarked. “But the truth is, I never left Count’s Kustoms. I’m still here, still painting, still creating.”
