“The offer is on the table” for the Duchess of Sussex

Meghan Markle could be preparing to swap the television studio for the radio booth after revealing on her Netflix series that one of the things she misses most about her life in Britain is tuning into Magic FM, the London station known for its mix of soft rock and nostalgic hits.
Days after the admission aired, Paul Sylvester, the station’s content director, stood on stage at a broadcasting conference and surprised his audience by extending a very public offer. “The offer is on the table,” Sylvester told the crowd.
“If the Duchess wants to host a show, she’s very welcome.” Asked later if he had been half-joking, Sylvester responded on social media with a short reply: “I did say exactly this.”
That confirmation set off speculation on both sides of the Atlantic about whether the Duchess of Sussex, who is already familiar with podcasting and television, might take up a microphone to curate songs and talk with listeners in the same style that has made Magic FM popular across the United Kingdom.
The idea began as an offhand remark. In an episode of With Love, Meghan released earlier this month, Markle sat opposite fashion star Tan France and began talking about daily routines she remembered fondly.

“You know, one of the things I really miss about living in the U.K. is the radio station called Magic,” she said. France leaned back in his chair and gave her a playful smirk.
“Magic FM? That’s such a grandma station,” he teased. Markle burst into laughter and shot back, “I’ll be that grandma. I don’t care.” She explained that in California she listens to a satellite channel called Mom Jeans.
“They’re throwback, great sing-alongs you forget even existed,” she said. “I love it.” France shook his head and chuckled, “That is so on brand for you.”
Her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have picked up the habit as well. “It used to be Kidz Bop all the time in the car,” she told a reporter earlier this year.
“Now for drop-off and pick-up, even Lili will say, ‘Can we listen to Mama Jeans?’ And I say, ‘It’s Mom Jeans, but yes, we sure can.’” The remark was lighthearted, but for Magic FM it represented something more.
Within hours of the Netflix episode streaming, fans were tagging the station online, and executives saw an opportunity.
By the time Sylvester took the stage at the Radiocentre’s Tuning In conference in London, the line was ready. “She clearly loves what we do,” he said. “So why shouldn’t she have the chance to do it herself?”
For Markle, who has tested different media formats since stepping back from royal duties, the notion is not far-fetched.
She co-created a Spotify podcast that later ended and has experimented with new projects through her and Prince Harry’s Archewell company. Radio would be a different challenge: live, unpredictable, and deeply connected to everyday listeners.
“She has the voice, she has the presence, and she has the taste,” said one producer who works at Magic.
“It would not be a gimmick. Our audience loves the kind of music she already plays at home.” When asked what sort of show Markle might lead, the producer imagined something that blends personal storytelling with a curated playlist.
“She could say, ‘Here’s a song I used to dance to with my mom,’ and then introduce Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston. That’s the power of radio. It’s intimate.”
The Duchess has already hinted at what such a playlist could look like. Earlier this month she shared a set of 19 songs on Instagram, calling them the tracks that “kept the vibe alive” while filming her Netflix series.
Among them were “Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison, “How Sweet It Is” by James Taylor, and “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers. There was Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Mary Wells, and Bobby Hebb.
“Between setups, I would play a song from my phone, and today I wanted to share some of the favorites I kept on rotation,” she wrote. Friends say the music is not just background for her but part of how she connects with people.
“If she’s nervous before filming, she’ll put on Whitney Houston and sing all the words,” one friend explained. “It breaks the ice.”

At home in California, the idea of mom as a DJ has already been floated. According to one person close to the family, Prince Archie asked half-seriously, “Would you play ‘Sunny’? That’s the one we dance to.” Markle reportedly laughed and answered, “Of course I would.”
Even Prince Harry has chimed in with a joke. “As long as you don’t play Spice Girls every day,” he teased, “I’m in.”
Whether those jokes turn into real programming is another matter. Practical hurdles remain, not least of which is geography. Magic FM broadcasts out of London, and Markle lives in Montecito. Broadcasting live from California would mean tackling an eight-hour time difference.
The morning drive slot in Britain, a prized position for radio talent, would land at two or three in the morning on the U.S. west coast.
Remote hosting is possible, but complicated, and travel to the U.K. has been rare for the couple since stepping back from royal duties. Security concerns have often made their visits brief.
There is also the question of whether she would want to tie her public brand to a legacy U.K. outlet. Some commentators suggest the offer is as much a marketing move for Magic FM as it is a serious attempt to recruit a new presenter.
“It puts their name in every paper for a week,” said one British media analyst. “Even if she politely declines, they’ve won.”
Others believe it could be mutually beneficial. “Radio needs voices that resonate beyond borders,” the analyst added. “And she has a global following. If she agreed, the show could be simulcast or podcast afterward, creating a new kind of format.”

For now, Markle has given no public response. Friends say she is flattered but cautious. “She laughed when she first heard about it and said, ‘That’s very sweet,’” one person familiar with the conversation said.
“But she added, ‘I’m not sure they’re ready for me at seven a.m. on a Tuesday.’” Still, the fact that she is even being considered speaks to the fascination surrounding her every move.
Radio executives rarely dangle offers in front of public figures without at least hoping for some traction.
“You don’t get a chance to invite someone like Meghan Markle very often,” Sylvester told reporters after his speech. “If she ever says yes, we’ll be ready.”
Whether she does say yes remains uncertain, but the image is already taking shape: Meghan Markle behind a microphone, cueing up a James Taylor ballad, pausing between tracks to share a story about childhood car rides, or about her kids now shouting requests from the back seat.
“That’s what radio is about,” Sylvester said. “Connection. And she clearly already feels connected to us.”
