Jay Cutler, former NFL quarterback and longtime Chicago Bears star, was handed a brief jail sentence Tuesday after pleading guilty to a charge of driving under the influence stemming from an October 2024 incident in Franklin, Tennessee.

The plea deal resolved a multi-count case, including a weapon possession charge that was dismissed under the agreement, though Cutler will have to surrender his firearms.

In addition to serving four days in jail next month, Cutler was ordered to pay a \$350 fine, attend a DUI safety course, and will remain on unsupervised probation for a year, while his driver’s license has been revoked.

The incident occurred last fall when Cutler allegedly rear-ended another vehicle on a Franklin road. Responding officers noted that the former quarterback’s speech was slurred, and he refused to participate in field sobriety testing at the scene.

A subsequent blood draw, conducted at a local hospital under a warrant, provided evidence that led to the DUI charge.

Authorities also found a rifle and a loaded handgun in Cutler’s center console, raising additional concerns and initially prompting charges of firearm possession under the influence, which were ultimately dropped in the plea deal.

Courtroom sources described Cutler as composed during the proceedings, entering the plea with his legal team by his side.

While the plea resolved most of the legal jeopardy, the consequences still carry the weight of public scrutiny, particularly given Cutler’s high-profile NFL career.

The former quarterback has been a fixture in professional football since being drafted 11th overall by the Denver Broncos in 2006 after a standout collegiate career at Vanderbilt University.

He spent his first three NFL seasons with Denver before joining the Chicago Bears, where he played the bulk of his career.

During his 12-year tenure with the Bears, Cutler threw for 23,443 yards and 154 touchdowns over 102 regular-season games. Despite the individual success, team achievements were limited, with the Bears making the playoffs only once under his leadership, in 2010.

Cutler concluded his professional playing career in 2017 with the Miami Dolphins, finishing with career totals of 35,133 passing yards and 160 touchdowns across 153 games.

Friends and former teammates described Cutler as a dedicated athlete, known for his competitiveness and leadership in the locker room.

Former Bears coach Lovie Smith once remarked, “Jay demanded excellence, and he held himself accountable. Off the field, he was quieter, but he carried himself with a sense of professionalism.”

Still, incidents like the DUI arrest serve as reminders of the challenges professional athletes can face transitioning from high-profile careers to life beyond the gridiron.

The October 2024 incident was particularly notable because of the presence of firearms in Cutler’s vehicle, which escalated initial charges and raised questions about safety and judgment.

Tennessee law provides for strict penalties in cases involving DUI with weapons, and prosecutors had initially sought to hold Cutler accountable on multiple counts.

However, the plea deal negotiated by his attorneys allowed him to avoid more severe consequences while still acknowledging responsibility for impaired driving.

Cutler’s legal team emphasized that their client was committed to complying fully with the terms of the court, noting that he understood the seriousness of the charges and had taken steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

A source close to the former quarterback said, “Jay regrets the situation and is focused on learning from it. He’s taking responsibility and is committed to moving forward responsibly.” Public reaction to the sentencing has been mixed.

Some fans expressed disappointment, reflecting on the contrast between Cutler’s professional achievements and the legal misstep, while others noted that the resolution allows him to move forward and focus on life after football.
