Veteran actor Bruce Dern is paying tribute to his former wife, acclaimed actress Diane Ladd, following her death on Monday, November 3rd, at the age of 89.

Diane was a tremendous actress, Dern, 89, said in a statement shared with People.

The pair were married from 1960 to 1969 and shared two daughters, including Laura Dern, who announced her mother’s passing earlier this week.

In his heartfelt remembrance, the “Nebraska” star reflected on Ladd’s extraordinary career and enduring legacy.

“She was a bit of a hidden treasure until she ran into David Lynch,” he said.

When Lynch cast her as Laura’s mom in “Wild at Heart,” it felt like the world then really understood her brilliance.

Ladd starred opposite her daughter in the 1990 Lynch film, playing a volatile mother-daughter duo, and reunited with both Laura and Lynch years later in “Inland Empire” (2006).

She also earned three Academy Award nominations for her roles in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” (1974), “Wild at Heart” (1990), and “Rambling Rose” (1991), the latter also starring Laura.

“Diane was a great value as a decades-long board member, giving a real actress’s point of view,” Bruce continued.

“He praised her for living a good life and seeing everything the way it was. She was a great teammate to her fellow actors. She was funny, clever, and gracious.”

The actor’s tribute also touched on Ladd’s personal warmth and strength beyond her professional accomplishments.

“But most importantly to me,” he added, “she was a wonderful mother to our incredible wonder daughter, and for that, I will be forever grateful to her.”

Bruce and Diane’s relationship began early in their careers when the two appeared together in a stage production of “Orpheus Descending” in New York City.

They married in 1960 and welcomed two daughters, Laura, born in 1967, and Diane, who tragically died in a swimming pool accident at just 18 months old.

“It was awful,” Bruce told People in a 1990 interview.

“It was very, very tough. I don’t think Diane and I had a chance after that.”

The couple separated two months after Laura’s birth and later divorced, though they maintained mutual respect throughout their lives.

Both went on to become celebrated figures in Hollywood, with Bruce earning two Oscar nominations and Diane three while supporting their daughter’s acclaimed career.

When Laura Dern won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2020 for “Marriage Story,” she dedicated her speech to both of her parents.

“Some say never meet your heroes,” she said on stage, “but I say if you’re really blessed, you get them as your parents.

I share this with my acting heroes, my legends, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern.”

“She lived fully and she gave everything she had,” he said.
