What do we really know about Marco Rubio’s personal life? As the US Secretary of State, he is constantly in the public eye.
But behind the political speeches and policy decisions, there’s a whole other side to the story.
At the heart of it is his wife, Janette Rubio.
Janette, now 51, was raised in Miami by Colombian immigrant parents.
Marco, whose parents emigrated from Cuba, met her when he was 19 and she was just 17 at the West Miami Recreation Center.
They were high school sweethearts in the making.
“I was 19 and she was 17.
So, did you know right away?” a friend once asked Marco.
“I did.
I’m not sure she did,” he replied.
After seven years together, their relationship had grown strong enough for Marco to propose at the top of the Empire State Building.
A scene straight out of a romantic comedy, the location held special meaning for them.
New York City was special because Marco got engaged there.
He chose the spot because Janette loved the movie Sleepless in Seattle.
He proposed on Valentine’s Day, setting the bar high.
He even tried to incorporate something she liked into the proposal.
Janette once recalled, “So I got her up there.
I proposed and then I was afraid.
I don’t know why it was this thing.
I think I thought she was going to drop the ring off the side.
So I grabbed the ring back and then I gave it back to her and we got to the bottom.”
They tied the knot in 1998 in Coral Gables, Florida, and have been building their life together ever since.
Janette isn’t your typical political spouse.
She once was a cheerleader for the Miami Dolphins but only for a year.
According to a former teammate, she wasn’t the stereotypical cheerleader type — more introverted than 95% of the team.
While Marco’s political career accelerated from local offices to the Senate, Janette made it clear she wasn’t chasing the spotlight.
She preferred a life of stability and faith, focusing on raising their four children: Amanda, Daniela, Anthony, and Dominic.
“It’s amazing because I see so much of Marco in all of my kids,” Janette said.
“Daniela’s passion, Amanda’s very deep and loves to read books, Anthony is the same way, and Dominic is just very charismatic.”
Janette has always tried to protect family time.
When Marco served in the Florida legislature, she often traveled with their children to Tallahassee, ensuring family remained front and center amidst late-night political dealmaking.
Even during his Senate campaign in 2010, Janette insisted that if Marco could be home at night, he should be.
Now, Janette mostly focuses on family.
She attends Bible study, shares heartwarming family moments on Instagram, and keeps politics at arm’s length.
However, her influence on Marco’s views is undeniable.
Deeply committed to faith and family values, Janette has shaped Marco’s political stances, especially on sensitive issues like abortion.
Friends say her convictions helped deepen his own.
She even took him to a shelter for victims of child abuse, which influenced his decision to co-sponsor legislation protecting them.
Janette has also been active in community work, particularly around human trafficking.
She serves on Florida’s statewide council on human trafficking and is involved with Christy’s House, a local organization supporting children who have survived abuse and trafficking.
Earlier in her career, Janette worked for billionaire Norman Brahman, helping identify philanthropic causes.
When Marco’s political team faced difficulties, some staffers turned to Janette to help steer the ship.
She became a quiet yet powerful force behind the scenes — a gatekeeper and moral compass.
“Marco dives into something, when he wants to know about an issue, he’s going to know everything about it,” a close source said.
But don’t expect to see Janette giving campaign speeches or chasing media attention.
She has made her position clear: “I’m not pushing myself out there.
I need to be with the kids just to give them that balance,” she told Politico.
This approach has been consistent from the start.
“We are very blessed.
Family’s a gift.
God has given us such a gift.
I cannot be more thankful,” Janette said.
What is the secret to their relationship? According to Marco, it’s not just about feelings but commitment.
“Love isn’t just a feeling,” he once said.
“It actually requires you to act on it.
It’s a sacrificial love — the kind of love that keeps you showing up even when political life pulls you in every direction.”
A Comparison: Canada’s Power Couple – Mark Carney and Diana Fox Carney
Speaking of supportive spouses, Janette and Marco’s story brings to mind another couple making waves on the global stage: Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, and his wife Diana Fox Carney.
Like the Rubios, they have built a partnership that transcends politics — grounded in shared values, support, and staying grounded no matter the stakes.
Mark and Diana’s relationship dates back to their university days at Oxford, where they bonded over ice hockey.
Diana was part of the Oxford University ice hockey club, as was Mark — a fun fact highlighting how power couples can form on the rink.
Diana was born in the UK and boasts an impressive academic background, studying philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford, followed by a master’s in agricultural economics, and later a master’s in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania.
Professionally, she is an economist focused on developing countries, with leadership roles at think tanks like Canada 2020 and the Institute for Public Policy Research.
Mark and Diana married in 1994 and have raised four daughters: Cleo, Tess, Amelia, and Sasha.
Their eldest, Cleo, recently took center stage as a Harvard freshman, introducing her father before his victory speech in March 2025.
Her heartfelt speech described Mark as “unflinchingly dedicated to what matters, focused and principled, funny and kind,” highlighting the man behind the politics.
Diana, though usually low-profile, was front and center on election night, dressed in a sleek red suit, sitting proudly next to Cleo as Mark gave his speech — a picture of quiet strength and support.
Janette Rubio’s story is a powerful reminder that behind every prominent political figure is a partner whose influence and support shape the journey.
Her dedication to family, faith, and quiet strength has not only helped mold Marco Rubio’s public service but has also created a nurturing home amidst the whirlwind of politics.
As political life demands sacrifice and resilience, Janette’s steadfast presence exemplifies the vital role of a spouse in balancing ambition with love and commitment.
