The day I buried my husband, it was raining gently.
The small black umbrella I held wasn’t enough to cover the loneliness in my heart.
In front of the freshly dug grave, whose earth was still damp, I trembled as I held an incense stick.

My companion of almost forty years, my Rajan, had become a handful of cold earth.
That day marked the beginning of a phase I never imagined I would experience: abandonment by my own son.
After the funeral, I didn’t have time to wallow in grief.
My eldest son, Ravi, whom my husband trusted completely, took the keys to the house without delay.
Years ago, when Rajan was still healthy, he had said, “You’re getting older, I’m getting older, let’s put everything in our son’s name.
If everything is in his name, he’ll be responsible.”
” I didn’t object.
What parents don’t love their children? So the house, the deeds, all the documents were in Ravi’s name.
On the seventh day after the funeral, Ravi invited me for a ride.
I didn’t expect the trip to be like a knife wound.
The vehicle stopped on the outskirts of Lucknow, near an auto-rickshaw stand.
Ravi, in a cold voice, said,
“Get off here.
My wife and I can’t take care of you anymore.
From now on, you’ll have to take care of yourself.”
My ears were ringing, my vision blurred.
I thought I’d heard wrong.
But his eyes were firm, as if he wanted to push me out immediately.
I sat on the side of the road, next to a liquor store, with just a bag of clothes.
That house, where I had lived, where I had taken care of my husband and children, was now in his name.
I had no right to return.
People say, โWhen you lose your husband, you still have your children.โ
But sometimes having children is like not having any at all.
My own son had thrown me into a corner.
However, Ravi didn’t know something: I wasn’t totally helpless.
I always carried a bank book in my pocket: the money Rajan and I had saved throughout our lives, more than thirty million rupees.
We had kept it a secret, without our children or anyone else knowing.
Rajan used to say, โPeople are only good to you as long as you have something in your hands.โ
That day I decided to remain silent.
I wasn’t going to beg, I wasn’t going to reveal my secret.
I wanted to see how Ravi and life itself treated me.
The first night after being abandoned, I took shelter under the eaves of a small tea shop.
The owner, Aunty Lata, took pity on me and served me a hot cup.
When I told her I had just lost my husband and that my children had left me, she just sighed:
“You see a lot of cases like this these days, Sister.
Children sometimes value money more than love.”
I temporarily rented a small boarding house, paying with the interest on my account.
I was very careful: I never told anyone I had a lot of money.
I lived a simple life: I wore old clothes, bought cheap bread and lentils, and tried not to attract attention.
There were many nights when I curled up in the wooden bed, remembering the old house, the squeak of the fan on the ceiling, the aroma of the spiced tea Rajan had prepared.
The memories hurt, but I told myself: as long as I live, I must keep going.
Little by little, I adjusted to the new life.
During the day, I asked for work at the market: washing vegetables, carrying goods, wrapping packages.
I was paid little, but I didn’t care.
I wanted to stay afloat, not rely on charity.
The market traders called me “Mrs. Shanti.”
They didn’t know that every time the market closed, I would return to my rented room, open my savings account, look at it for a moment, and put it away again.
That was my secret to staying alive.
One day, I ran into an old friend from my youth, Mrs. Meera.
Seeing me at the boarding house, I told her that my husband had passed away and that life had become difficult.
She took pity on me and offered me a job at her family’s dhaba (roadside restaurant).
I accepted.
The work was hard, but in return, I had food and a place to sleep.
And I had even more reasons to keep my savings account a secret.
Meanwhile, I received news of Ravi.
He lived with his wife and children in a large house, had bought a new car, but gambled.
An acquaintance whispered to me, “I’m sure he’s already pawned the land deeds.”
I listened painfully, but decided not to contact him.
He had abandoned his mother at a rickshaw station; I had nothing more to say.
One afternoon, while I was cleaning the dhaba, a strange man came looking for me.
He was well dressed, but his face was tense.
I recognized him: a hard-drinking friend of Ravi’s.
He stared at me and asked, “Are you Ravi’s mother?”
I stopped, nodded cautiously.
He leaned closer, his voice heavy with pressure:
“He owes us millions of rupees.
He’s in hiding now.
If you still love him, help him.”
I froze.
I just smiled slightly:
