Jimmy Kimmel Cancelled? ABC Shuts Down Late-Night Star After Explosive Charlie Kirk Comments

Late-night TV has just been rocked by a scandal that no one saw coming.

ABC announced it is pulling Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air indefinitely, after the comedian’s fiery comments about the tragic killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk sparked a political firestorm.

The news sent shockwaves through Hollywood and Washington alike, raising questions not only about Kimmel’s future but also about how far late-night hosts can go before the network pulls the plug.

It all started Monday night, when Kimmel, 57, launched into a biting monologue about the “MAGA gang.”

Speaking about Kirk’s shocking death — he was gunned down on the Utah Valley University campus on September 10 — Kimmel accused conservatives of “trying to score political points” from the tragedy.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel told his audience.

The words drew gasps from viewers and immediate backlash online. Within 48 hours, ABC made the stunning decision: Kimmel’s show was done, for now.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be pre-empted indefinitely,” an ABC spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday, September 17.

The hammer fell even harder when Nexstar Media Group, a massive broadcast company tied to ABC affiliates, released its own statement.

“Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk,” the company declared. “We will replace the show with other programming for the foreseeable future.”

Andrew Alford, Nexstar’s president of broadcasting, didn’t hold back:
“Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform is simply not in the public interest at this time,” he said. “His comments were offensive and insensitive at a critical moment in our national discourse.”

Just when it seemed things couldn’t get worse, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) entered the fray.

Chairman Brendan Carr, in an interview with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, blasted Kimmel’s remarks as “some of the sickest conduct possible.”

He even hinted at potential FCC action, citing rules against “news distortion” on licensed TV stations.

“Frankly, when you see stuff like this, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr said ominously. “Either networks change conduct, or the FCC has more work ahead.”

The FCC chief went further, suggesting that a public apology from Kimmel, ABC, and parent company Disney was “the bare minimum.” Without it, punishment could follow.

“There are calls for Kimmel to be fired,” Carr said. “A suspension is on the table. This is a very, very serious issue for Disney.”

Kimmel’s representatives have not issued a statement, but online, the reaction is split.

Conservative voices have cheered ABC’s move, calling Kimmel’s comments “disgusting” and “long overdue for accountability.”

Meanwhile, liberal fans are crying foul, accusing the network of bowing to political pressure and fueling another round of cancel culture.

This isn’t the first time late-night has faced political controversy. Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show was already confirmed to be ending after its next season, following speculation about his clashes with CBS executives.

Now, many are asking: will Kimmel face the same fate?

His once-powerful platform may have been silenced, at least for now. But whether this is a temporary suspension or the death of one of late-night’s most polarizing figures remains to be seen.

For Jimmy Kimmel, the joke may finally be on him.
