“I Planned to Kill Charlie Kirk”: Prosecutors Unveil Disturbing Evidence as Suspect Faces Death Penalty
The murder case that has shaken America’s political landscape took a chilling turn Tuesday, as prosecutors revealed damning new evidence against Tyler James Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
According to Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray, Robinson not only confessed in text messages to his romantic partner but also left a handwritten note explicitly stating his plan to kill one of the country’s most influential conservative voices.
“I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it,” the note allegedly read.
Robinson is now formally charged with murder and multiple felony counts that could bring the death penalty if convicted.
On September 10, Charlie Kirk was delivering remarks during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University when a single bullet struck his neck.
Prosecutors allege Robinson, positioned on a nearby rooftop, used a bolt-action rifle to fire the fatal shot.
DNA recovered from the rifle’s trigger reportedly matched Robinson, confirming him as the prime suspect.
Investigators also traced a chilling series of text messages Robinson sent to his partner before and after the attack.
In one message, he admitted to planning the shooting for over a week, writing, “I had enough of his hatred.
Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”
Though prosecutors have not officially linked the motive to Kirk’s controversial views, Robinson’s texts suggested deep anger over Kirk’s outspoken positions.
Kirk, 31, was a close ally of former President Donald Trump and a powerful voice in the Republican youth movement, often taking provocative stances on gender, race, and transgender issues.
Gray declined to say whether Robinson specifically targeted Kirk over his anti-transgender rhetoric but acknowledged that investigators are “starting to get a picture of where his mind was.”
Robinson’s partner, reportedly a transgender individual, has been cooperating with authorities.
Court filings reveal that Robinson’s mother told investigators her son had recently shifted left politically after beginning the relationship, leading to heated clashes with his conservative father.

Robinson’s family recognized him from surveillance footage released after the shooting.
When confronted, Robinson allegedly admitted his role and expressed suicidal thoughts.
A retired sheriff’s deputy, a longtime family friend, persuaded him to surrender peacefully.
He was arrested late Thursday near his hometown of St.
George, Utah, roughly 240 miles from the crime scene.
During a brief virtual court appearance on Tuesday, Robinson appeared emotionless as the charges were read aloud.
He did not enter a plea.
Prosecutors also disclosed that Robinson discarded the rifle, along with clothing worn during the attack, and later begged his partner to delete incriminating text messages.
“I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age,” Robinson reportedly wrote.
He also lamented leaving behind his grandfather’s rifle, repeatedly expressing regret in texts that authorities released in court.
As a result, Robinson faces additional charges of witness tampering, obstruction of justice, and felony discharge of a firearm.
The FBI confirmed Tuesday that Robinson had been active in a Discord gaming chatroom involving at least 20 participants.
FBI Director Kash Patel told lawmakers in Washington the agency is “running out every lead” to determine whether Robinson acted alone or if the murder was part of a broader movement.
“This was not only an attack on Charlie Kirk,” Patel said, “but potentially part of a troubling rise in politically motivated violence.”
The assassination has intensified America’s already fierce political divisions.
Supporters hailed Kirk as a martyr for conservative values, while critics pointed to his polarizing rhetoric.
Utah’s Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason noted the case reveals stark ideological divides even within Robinson’s own family: “Their views differed significantly, and the conversations were often explosive.”
For Kirk’s allies, however, the focus remains on honoring his legacy.
At a press conference, Gray declared: “The murder of Charlie Kirk is an American tragedy.”
If convicted, Robinson could face the death penalty, a prospect that prosecutors say reflects both the premeditation of the crime and its devastating impact on national discourse.

Charlie Kirk leaves behind his wife, Erika, and two young children.
Just days after his death, the board of Turning Point USA unanimously elected Erika Kirk as CEO, vowing to carry forward his mission: “We have a country to save.”
But even as his movement presses forward, the legal battle surrounding his assassin is only beginning.
Robinson is expected back in court later this fall, with prosecutors preparing what they say will be a comprehensive case built on forensic evidence, confessions, and witness testimony.
For many Americans, the haunting question remains: was Charlie Kirk killed simply for what he believed?
