This transaction provides Thielen with the opportunity to conclude his illustrious career in the state where he was born, raised, and spent the majority of his professional journey.

The trade agreement stipulates that the Panthers will receive a 2026 fifth-round draft pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick, while the Vikings will obtain Thielen, a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick, and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

Sources have confirmed that the Vikings will cover the remainder of Thielen’s salary for the 2025 season, and both parties are currently negotiating a revised contract to finalize his compensation for that year.

Born in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Thielen’s football journey began at Minnesota State University, Mankato, before he embarked on his NFL career with the Vikings.

Over nine seasons, he established himself as a key player for the team, becoming one of the franchise’s all-time greats.

Adam Thielen traded back to the Vikings

Released after the 2022 season, Thielen’s return comes at a crucial time for the Vikings, who are grappling with a lack of receiver depth due to the three-game suspension of starter Jordan Addison and a series of injuries affecting other receivers during training camp.

As the Vikings prepare for their season opener against the Chicago Bears on September 8, Thielen’s experience and familiarity with the team’s offensive scheme make him a strong candidate to start alongside star receiver Justin Jefferson.

During his tenure with the Vikings, Thielen compiled an impressive 534 career catches, ranking third in franchise history, trailing only Hall of Famers Cris Carter and Randy Moss.

His final season with the Vikings saw him record 70 receptions, coinciding with coach Kevin O’Connell’s first season at the helm.

Thielen’s understanding of O’Connell’s offensive system was a significant factor in the Vikings’ decision to bring him back, especially given the recent injuries to key receivers.

The Vikings faced a setback when they lost receiver Rondale Moore to a season-ending knee injury during their preseason opener.

Additionally, the status of No.3 receiver Jalen Nailor remains uncertain after he suffered a hand injury on August 14 and has not practiced since.

Thielen’s return is expected to alleviate these concerns and provide a reliable target for quarterback J.J.McCarthy, with whom he has trained over the past two summers.

Perfect Adam Thielen alternative may have just landed in Vikings' lap

Thielen’s journey to the NFL is a testament to his determination and hard work.

Undrafted in 2013, he initially did not sign with any team as a rookie free agent.

The Vikings offered him a chance to showcase his skills during their rookie minicamp, where he impressed enough to earn a full contract.

His breakthrough came midway through the 2016 season when he became a starter, ultimately earning consecutive Pro Bowl selections with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2017 and 2018.

However, as the Vikings’ offense evolved, particularly with the emergence of Justin Jefferson as a rookie in 2020, Thielen’s role began to shift.

By the 2022 season, he had transitioned to a secondary option in the passing game.

The Vikings ultimately released him after the season, opting not to carry a contract that would have resulted in a staggering $19.97 million cap hit for 2023.
