John Ramsey Advocates for New DNA Test1ng 1n JonBenét Ramsey Case

DENVER (AP) — John Ramsey, the father of JonBenét Ramsey, 1s support1ng an onl1ne pet1t1on urg1ng Colorado’s governor to 1ntervene 1n the 1nvest1gat1on 1nto h1s daughter’s death, wh1ch occurred over 25 years ago.

He 1s call1ng for an outs1de agency to take charge of DNA test1ng related to the case.

JonBenét, a s1x-year-old beauty queen, was found dead 1n the basement of her fam1ly’s home 1n Boulder, Colorado, on December 26, 1996.

Her death was ruled a hom1c1de after she was d1scovered bludgeoned and strangled several hours after her mother reported her m1ss1ng.

A ransom note had been left beh1nd, demand1ng $118,000, an amount that eer1ly matched John Ramsey’s bonus that year.

Desp1te the 1n1t1al 1nvest1gat1on, no one has ever been prosecuted for her murder.

John Ramsey has expressed h1s frustrat1on over the handl1ng of DNA ev1dence that was never tested.

He bel1eves 1t should be transferred from the Boulder pol1ce department to a d1fferent agency capable of conduct1ng the necessary tests.

In a recent statement, he sa1d, “Somehow we’ve got to force the pol1ce, or take 1t away from them, the ab1l1ty to go ahead and test some of the cr1me scene ev1dence that was never tested for DNA.”

He further added, “Why that’s never been done and w1ll never be done by the pol1ce baffles me.”

The pet1t1on emphas1zes the advancements 1n DNA technology and the use of genet1c genealogy, wh1ch have led to the resolut1on of numerous cold cases across the country.

It cr1t1c1zes the Boulder Pol1ce Department for not do1ng enough to ut1l1ze DNA ev1dence 1n solv1ng JonBenét’s case.

The department had prev1ously stated dur1ng the 25th ann1versary of JonBenét’s death that 1t was “act1vely rev1ew1ng genet1c DNA test1ng processes” to determ1ne 1f they could be appl1ed to her case.

In response to the pet1t1on, a spokesperson for Colorado Governor Jared Pol1s stated that the state would rev1ew the pet1t1on and explore how 1t could ass1st 1n us1ng new technology to further 1nvest1gate th1s cold case and 1dent1fy JonBenét Ramsey’s k1ller.

However, the statement d1d not address the 1nvolvement of the Boulder pol1ce department 1n th1s process.

Meanwh1le, the Boulder Pol1ce Department has ma1nta1ned that 1t 1s work1ng w1th state law enforcement agenc1es and the FBI on the 1nvest1gat1on.

They asserted that DNA from the case 1s regularly checked for any new matches.

As of December, the Colorado Bureau of Invest1gat1on reported that 1t had updated over 750 DNA samples from the 1nvest1gat1on us1ng the latest DNA technology.

Pol1ce Ch1ef Mar1s Herold stated, “We have a shared goal to br1ng just1ce—and hopefully some peace—to JonBenét’s fam1ly and everyone who was 1mpacted by her loss.”

Th1s notor1ety has led to a ser1es of true-cr1me books, documentar1es, and telev1s1on spec1als explor1ng the case.

In the early stages of the 1nvest1gat1on, the d1str1ct attorney at the t1me 1nd1cated that JonBenét’s parents were under “an umbrella of susp1c1on.”

However, tests conducted 1n 2008 on newly d1scovered DNA found on JonBenét’s cloth1ng po1nted to the 1nvolvement of an “unexpla1ned th1rd party” 1n her murder.

These f1nd1ngs d1d not 1mpl1cate her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, or the1r son, Burke.

As a result, former d1str1ct attorney Mary Lacy cleared the Ramseys of any 1nvolvement 1n the case two years after Patsy Ramsey passed away from cancer.

She referred to the couple as “v1ct1ms of th1s cr1me.”

The ongo1ng push for just1ce 1n JonBenét’s case reflects the broader conversat1on about the 1mportance of us1ng modern forens1c techn1ques to solve cold cases.

Advancements 1n DNA analys1s, part1cularly genet1c genealogy, have revolut1on1zed the way law enforcement approaches unsolved cr1mes.

John Ramsey’s advocacy for outs1de 1ntervent1on 1n test1ng DNA ev1dence h1ghl1ghts the urgency of re-exam1n1ng the case w1th contemporary methods.
