“After 8 Years in the Cold: The Untold Story Behind Ice Road Truckers’ Daring Comeback That Almost Never Happened”
When Ice Road Truckers first premiered in 2007, it redefined what reality television could be — a raw, adrenaline-charged look into one of the world’s most dangerous professions.
For eleven seasons, millions of viewers watched fearless drivers like Lisa Kelly, Alex Debogorski, and Darrell Ward battle the unforgiving frozen roads of Alaska and Canada.
But after its eleventh season in 2017, the engines went silent.

Fans were left wondering: would they ever see the world’s toughest truckers again? Now, eight years later, Ice Road Truckers is roaring back for Season 12 — and according to showrunner Patrick Costello, the road to revival was just as treacherous as the ones the drivers face on screen.
In an exclusive conversation, Costello revealed that talks of bringing the series back began quietly in 2023.
“We never stopped getting messages from fans,” he said.
“Every week someone would ask, ‘When are the truckers coming back?’ It was clear the show had never really left people’s hearts.
” But reviving a show of this scale — shot in some of the most remote and inhospitable locations on Earth — was no easy feat.
Costello explained that securing filming permits across northern Canada, rebuilding production teams, and finding the right balance between veteran drivers and new blood all took time.
“We knew if we were going to do this, it had to be real.
The danger had to be authentic.
That’s the soul of Ice Road Truckers.”
The new season, filmed over four months in early 2025, takes viewers back to the icy highways stretching from Yellowknife to the Arctic Circle.
But this isn’t a nostalgic rerun.
Season 12 introduces new drivers and challenges that reflect the rapidly changing face of the trucking industry.
“Climate change has altered the ice roads dramatically,” Costello said.
“Some routes that used to last 70 days now barely last 30.
That means higher pressure, tighter deadlines, and real consequences if something goes wrong.
” According to him, this shift added a new layer of urgency — both for the drivers and the production crew.
Returning favorites like Lisa Kelly and Todd Dewey bring the same grit and charisma fans remember, but the show also introduces fresh faces like Bill Danh, the CEO of Muskie Creek Ltd., who manages much of the season’s logistics.
There’s also Scott “Scooter” Yuil, a veteran driver from Yellowknife, and the Harris family — Shaun, 51, and his sons Zach, 31, and Riley, 21 — representing a new generation of ice road haulers.
“We wanted to show that this world isn’t fading away,” Costello explained.
“It’s evolving.
Families are still risking it all to keep northern communities alive.
That’s something worth telling.”
Behind the camera, the production faced immense challenges.
Crews battled -40°F temperatures, mechanical breakdowns, and the constant risk of the ice cracking beneath their feet.
“There were moments when our cameras froze solid,” Costello admitted with a laugh.
“We had to thaw them using the heat from the truck engines.

” But he said the biggest challenge was emotional — returning to the ice roads without Darrell Ward, the beloved driver who tragically died in a plane crash in 2016.
“Darrell’s absence was felt deeply,” Costello said quietly.
“We dedicated a special segment in the premiere to honor him.
He was a legend, and we all felt like he was still out there with us, guiding us through every mile.”
Fans can expect a visual upgrade too.
Advances in drone and camera technology allowed the team to capture sweeping cinematic shots of the Arctic wilderness like never before.
“It’s not just a show about trucks — it’s about the sheer beauty and danger of a world most people will never see,” Costello said.
“We wanted every frame to remind viewers why these drivers do what they do: not for fame, but for survival, for pride, for the people who depend on them.”
The revival also arrives at a time when audiences are craving authenticity.
Reality TV has changed dramatically since Ice Road Truckers first aired — social media influencers and scripted “reality” now dominate the landscape.
But Costello insists that’s exactly why the show matters more than ever.
“There’s nothing fake about what these men and women do,” he said.
“You can’t script a 30-ton rig sliding across a cracking lake.
What you see is what’s really happening.”
Lisa Kelly echoed that sentiment in a short featurette promoting the new season.
“People think we’re crazy for doing this,” she said, laughing.
“But for us, it’s a way of life.
You face the ice, or you go home.
” Meanwhile, Todd Dewey admitted his return after nearly a decade was an emotional one.
“I missed the adrenaline.
The brotherhood.
Out here, it’s just you, your truck, and the road — and that’s something I’ll never stop chasing.”
According to insiders, the new season will also feature a powerful storyline about the decline of traditional ice roads due to warming temperatures, and how northern communities are adapting to maintain vital supply lines.
“It’s not just entertainment,” Costello emphasized.
“This show documents a vanishing way of life.
These roads might not exist in twenty years.
We wanted to capture that before it’s too late.”
When asked whether Ice Road Truckers might continue beyond Season 12, Costello smiled.
“If fans keep watching, we’ll keep driving.
But one thing’s for sure — this season is our most personal, our most dangerous, and our most beautiful yet.”
After nearly a decade of silence, the sound of roaring diesel engines and cracking ice is back.
For fans around the world, Ice Road Truckers Season 12 isn’t just a television comeback — it’s a return to the heart of what makes the series legendary: courage, endurance, and the unstoppable spirit of those who live — and sometimes die — by the ice.
