Jennifer Lopez’s Daughter, Emme Muñiz, Identifies as Non-Binary: This Is What Her Identity Means
In a moment that has sparked widespread attention and conversation, Emme Muñiz, the child of global superstar
Jennifer Lopez and singer Marc Anthony, has publicly embraced a non-binary identity—a term that reflects a gender identity outside the traditional categories of male and female.
The revelation came subtly but powerfully when Jennifer Lopez introduced Emme using they/them pronouns during a performance at the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation’s Blue Diamond Gala.
“The last time we performed together was in a big stadium like this, and I ask them to sing with me all the time, and they won’t.
So this is a very special occasion,” Lopez said onstage, highlighting Emme’s individuality and signaling respect for their identity.
For many fans, this wasn’t entirely unexpected.
Emme has always expressed a unique personality and style, often opting for androgynous clothing and avoiding traditional gender labels in public appearances.
Still, hearing J.Lo refer to her child with gender-neutral pronouns on such a public stage marked a significant and moving moment for LGBTQ+ visibility—especially among younger generations.
Being non-binary means identifying outside the gender binary—which refers to the traditional understanding of there being only two genders: male and female.
Non-binary individuals may feel like they are both genders, neither, or experience gender as fluid and changing over time.
It’s important to note that gender identity is different from sexual orientation.
Being non-binary has to do with how a person understands and experiences their own gender, not who they are attracted to.
Some non-binary people use they/them pronouns, as Emme does, while others might use she/her, he/him, or a combination.
The most important thing is that the pronouns used reflect and affirm their identity.
For someone as young as Emme—born in 2008—to receive public affirmation from their parent, especially one as high-profile as Jennifer Lopez, sends a powerful message of acceptance, love, and support.
In an industry that often forces people to fit into specific molds, seeing a celebrity family openly embrace gender diversity is both rare and inspiring.
Activists and LGBTQ+ advocates have applauded Lopez’s sensitivity and example as a parent.
“When parents—especially public figures—support their non-binary children, they help create a world where all kids can be themselves without fear,” said a spokesperson for GLAAD.
In a time when LGBTQ+ rights are still being challenged in many parts of the world, this kind of visibility matters more than ever.
Social media platforms exploded with messages of admiration and support following the performance.
Many praised Lopez for the natural and respectful way she spoke about her child.
Others expressed their joy at seeing a young non-binary person celebrated rather than hidden or shamed.
“This is what unconditional love looks like. Bravo to J.Lo and all parents raising their children to be authentically themselves,” one user wrote on Twitter.
Of course, there were also some negative or confused reactions—highlighting how much education is still needed around gender identity and pronoun usage.
But Emme’s quiet confidence and their mother’s proud support stood strong against the noise.
While still a teenager, Emme has already begun making a name for themselves—not only as a singer but as a thoughtful and grounded public figure.
They co-authored a children’s book at age 12 titled “Lord Help Me”, focused on faith, kindness, and the power of prayer.
They’ve also shown musical talent, famously performing with their mother during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2020, and more recently, at public charity events and concerts.
It remains to be seen whether Emme will pursue a career in music or forge their own path in another field, but one thing is clear: they will do it on their own terms.
Jennifer Lopez has often spoken about the importance of family and embracing every part of her children’s identities.
In interviews, she’s praised Emme and their twin brother, Max, for being deep, intuitive, and creative souls, and she’s made it a point to protect and nurture their individuality.
In a world that still too often resists difference, Emme Muñiz’s story is a reminder of the power of acceptance, the beauty of authenticity, and the role that loving families play in shaping a more inclusive future.
And with a supportive mother like J.Lo by their side, there’s no limit to what Emme can become.
