Amari Cooper’s Shocking Return: Raiders Welcome Back Their Former Star WR Amid Drama!
In a twist that has left many NFL fans buzzing, the Las Vegas Raiders have officially signed free-agent wide receiver Amari Cooper to a one-year deal, according to sources close to the team.
This marks a dramatic return for Cooper, who was drafted by the Raiders with the fourth overall pick in 2015 when the franchise was still based in Oakland.
During his initial tenure with the Raiders, Cooper made a significant impact, playing in 52 games and recording 225 receptions for 3,183 yards and 19 touchdowns.
He achieved remarkable success early in his career, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark in both of his first two seasons.
However, in 2018, the Raiders traded him to the Dallas Cowboys, where he continued to shine before being traded again to the Cleveland Browns in 2022.
Most recently, Cooper played for the Buffalo Bills, who acquired him last October.
Cooper’s return to the Raiders comes at a time of uncertainty within the team’s receiving corps.
Jakobi Meyers, another key wide receiver, has reportedly requested a trade amid a contract dispute, as he seeks a new deal entering the final year of his contract without any guaranteed money remaining.
Despite Meyers’ request, the Raiders have no plans to trade the 28-year-old pass catcher, who had a career year last season with 87 catches for 1,027 yards and four touchdowns.
With Meyers’ future in question and Tre Tucker contributing 47 receptions for 539 yards last season, the Raiders’ depth at wide receiver is under scrutiny.
The team is looking to bolster its roster with rookies Dont’e Thornton Jr.
and Jack Bech expected to play significant roles on offense.
Thornton, a towering 6-foot-5 receiver who clocked a 4.3-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine, has emerged as a starter during training camp, showcasing his big-play potential.
He is currently fine-tuning his route running and building chemistry with the new starting quarterback, Geno Smith.
Meanwhile, Bech, selected as the 58th pick in the 2025 draft, has primarily worked with the second-team offense in practice, adding to the intrigue surrounding the Raiders’ receiving lineup.
Cooper, now a 10-year veteran, had a mixed season with the Bills in 2024, appearing in eight regular-season games and three postseason contests.
He dealt with a left wrist injury that limited his effectiveness during his time in Buffalo.
Despite the injury, he managed to catch 20 of 32 regular-season targets for 297 yards and two touchdowns, along with six postseason receptions, albeit without a touchdown.
This past season marked the lowest production year of Cooper’s career.
However, he boasts an impressive resume with 711 career receptions, 10,033 receiving yards, and 64 touchdowns.
Notably, he has achieved over 1,000 receiving yards in seven seasons, including a career-high of 1,250 yards in 2023.
As Cooper reunites with the Raiders, fans are eager to see how he will fit into the team’s offensive scheme and whether he can recapture the form that made him one of the league’s top receivers.
The Raiders’ decision to bring back Cooper speaks volumes about their commitment to enhancing their receiving options as they navigate the upcoming season amid ongoing contract discussions and roster adjustments.
With Cooper back in the fold, the Raiders are hoping to solidify their receiving corps and provide Smith with reliable targets as they aim for success in the competitive landscape of the NFL.
The drama surrounding Meyers and the evolving dynamics of the team’s offense will undoubtedly add an extra layer of excitement to the Raiders’ 2025 campaign.
