Christopher Nolan‘s Inception has resurfaced again, but this time with a clear and definitive goal: to explain the ending once and for all.
After the dubious and divisive Leonardo DiCaprio totem scene, the film’s final shot has been the subject of infinite debates and discussions to figure out a definitive clue to this.
However, now the audience may have finally found an answer to the Inception puzzle piece.
And it was right under the audience’s noses all along.
Michael Caine’s character, Prof.Stephen Miles, is seen throughout the film in only the current reality, not a dream sequence.
His presence is the only thing that grounds the plot, rather than letting it float in a limbo of oblivion and uncertainty.
As such, Caine’s presence in the final scene as he introduces the children to Cobb can be construed as a real and tangible happy ending rather than a tragic and confusing one.

Not every movie in an actor’s or director’s catalog has the potential to haunt and trouble the audience and leave a lasting impression on their minds.
However, Christopher Nolan is one such director, and his movie Inception is one of the most impressive films out there.
That said, the film’s totem-spinning scene is an absolutely chilling finale and a gut punch.
As realization slowly creeps in about the implications of the scene, the audience grows increasingly horrified at Cobb’s fate in the film.
Even as the screen cuts to black, the viewer is transfixed and paralyzed by the thought of whether all of it was just a big dream sequence or something in the entire story was real, after all.
Moreover, the tragedy of Cobb uniting with his children makes the viewers have a hard time coming to terms with the finale.
It could mean that even if DiCaprio’s protagonist survived the whole film, he could have given in in the final moments for his children, and gotten stuck in the hellish limbo like Ken Watanabe‘s character, Saito.

While Nolan continues to impress, stun, and stupefy the audience with one mind-bending film after another, Inception continues to be one of his greatest achievements.
Though influenced and inspired by the works of other artists, the storyline is effectively haunting, the plot gripping, the visuals stunning, and the ensemble cast talented enough to give the absurd plot meaning.
In the end, Inception became the second-highest-grossing debut for a sci-fi movie after James Cameron‘s Avatar.
The film went on to earn $839 million (Box Office Mojo), placing it at #80 in all-time box office rankings.
The film is Leonardo DiCaprio’s second most profitable movie after Titanic, and went on to earn 8 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, and won 4.
