David Leitch, who directed the 2022 Brad Pitt film Bullet Train, was also attached to helm Jurassic World Rebirth as its director before giving up the honor.

The directorial duties were passed on to Gareth Edwards, but Leitch revealed the reason he chose to step away from the dinosaur franchise.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch, alongside his spouse and producer Kelly McCormick, sat down to talk about Jurassic World Rebirth.

Leitch revealed that the only reason he stepped out of the franchise was because he didn’t want to tell a story that felt like stretching the narrative.

If we jump into IP or a franchise, it’s got to be the right one at the right moment for all the right reasons.

And we were very seduced by the amazing franchise that Jurassic is.

McCormick continued,

But it’s harder and harder to make originals, and we just felt like, ‘If they go away, let’s try to make originals as much as possible as quickly as possible.

David Leitch added that when they had an original story to tell and you knew that the studios were going to like the script, that’s when he would take directorial duties to make a movie.

John Wick Co-Director Knows Not to Milk a Franchise

David Leitch has directed a plethora of iconic movies, namely Bullet Train, The Fall Guy, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Deadpool.

The director had his debut alongside Chad Stahelski in the 2014 film John Wick, but due to the strict rules, Leitch wasn’t given credit for co-directing the movie.

Well, from being a stunt performer to being one of the finest directors in Hollywood, Leitch has come quite far, and he knows when to step back from a movie.

With the Jurassic Park franchise having a ton of movies and sequels to its name, Leitch realised that he would not be able to tell an original tale.

Knowing not to milk a franchise beyond its boiling point, Leitch and Kelly McCormick simply decided to step back and let Gareth Edwards take the boat.

Despite success in terms of box office collections, Jurassic World Rebirth wasn’t an original tale.

Instead, it built on previous movies and events that had transpired, something that Leitch wouldn’t have liked to do.
With the brilliance of stunts and action movies, Leitch’s Hollywood career is looking quite brilliant, as the director has several movies to direct in various stages of production.
