Woody Allen Eyes Donald Trump For a Comeback After the Massive Leonardo DiCaprio Flop Film

Woody Allen has had a stroke of inspiration, and he wishes to direct President Donald Trump in another film, despite last flop with him in 1998.

In 1998, Woody Allen directed Celebrity, an ambitious film starring Donald Trump and Leonardo DiCaprio that turned out to be a massive box office flop.

27 years later, the director eyes President Trump for his comeback film after struggling to deliver a critical and commercial success like Midnight in Paris.

During his recent appearance on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, Allen revealed:

I’m one of the few people who can say he directed Trump.

I directed Trump in [‘Celebrity’].

He was a pleasure to work with and a very good actor.

He was very polite, hit his mark, did everything correctly and had a real flair for show business.

I could direct him now.

If he would let me direct him now that he’s president, I think I could do wonders.

Despite featuring numerous Hollywood stars in Celebrity, the film was a major disappointment, rated at 42% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned only half its production budget at the box office, i.e.

$6.2 million against $12 million, according to The Numbers.

Woody Allen’s Ambitious Donald Trump Film Cannot Top the POTUS’ One Epic Cameo

Celebrity (1998) featuring Charlize Theron as a supermodel.

In Chris Columbus’s 1992 hit, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Donald Trump appeared in a seven-second cameo with Macaulay Culkin.

The scene was a riot, led to a hail of controversies, and became such a “curse” for the director that he wishes he had cut it altogether [San Francisco Chronicle].

However, at the time, Trump’s reputation as a flamboyant self-made Manhattan real-estate tycoon and owner of the famed Plaza Hotel made the cameo an absolute scene stealer and a favorite among the audience.

Now, a cameo from Trump will hardly have a similar impact as it did back in ’92.

Woody Allen may be the most Oscar-nominated writer in Hollywood and a four-time Oscar winner, but his films have been a lackluster parade of flops for over a decade.

To want to land an ambitious comeback is only a natural desire for a prominent filmmaker like himself.

A still from Woody Allen's 1998 film, Celebrity.

But working with Donald Trump might be too ambitious, even by Woody Allen’s controversial standards.

For all intents and purposes, Donald Trump is now the President of the United States, and as the leader of the Free World, film sets may not be a priority in his everyday order of business.

What Woody Allen Thinks About Donald Trump’s Career in Politics

Filmmaker Woody Allen’s desire to get Donald Trump in front of a director’s lens might be purely inspired by his past experience.

Allen claimed that Trump had a somewhat “charismatic quality” whenever he stepped in front of the camera.

However, as far as Trump’s official role as the President is concerned, Allen is not that inspired by the POTUS.

On the Club Random podcast, the filmmaker claimed, “I disagree with many, almost all, not all, but almost all of his politics, of his policies.”

However, he also sympathized with Trump’s career shift from business to politics, saying:

I’m surprised he wanted to go into politics. Politics is nothing but headaches and critical decisions and agony.

This was a guy I used to see at the Knick games, and he liked to play golf, and he liked to judge beauty contests and he liked to do things that were enjoyable and relaxing.

Why anyone would want to suddenly have to deal with the issues of politics is beyond me.
